Maya froze, her boots sliding on the ground. The brick walls of the dead-end alley seemed to close in on her, trapping her in a space with Austin Vance's presence.
No not like this she thought. Her inner wolf. I tried to break free.
The silver stuff on her skin was almost gone, washed away by the rain and her fight with Jaxon. Now Austin's strong aura pressed down on her making her feel like she had to bow down. It was the feeling she had before he ended her life.
Austin took another step forward. His fancy shoes didn't make a sound. He moved like a predator that knew she couldn't escape. He tilted his umbrella, his blue eyes staring into her mask.
"You're far from school, bird, " Austin said. His voice was smooth and scary.
Maya's heart started beating. Does he know who I am?. Is he just messing with me?
"I don't know what you're talking about, " Maya said, trying to sound different. She got ready to move on the ground. "Get out of my way."
Austin chuckled. It was a sound that made her shiver. "Oh, the tough act. I saw your video. You kicked hard. I can tell you're from a ranking family no matter how much silver you use."
He stopped a feet away smelling like expensive cologne and power.
"You see Maya, " Austin whispered. His smile looked monstrous. "A princess shouldn't have bruises on her knuckles."
Hearing her name made Maya feel like she'd been hit with water. He knows. He figured it out. Now he's going to take her.
"Why?" Maya demanded. Her eyes burned with hatred. "Why are you doing this?"
"Because you belong to me, " Austin said. His voice was cold. "Your father. You're the piece I need. Now take off the mask. Come with me. I'll have my men take you away."
He reached out his fingers extended toward her face.
Maya didn't hesitate. She kicked at Austin aiming for his throat.
Austin's eyes widened in shock. He threw his arm up in time. Her boot hit his forearm with a loud c***k. He stumbled back, his face twisting in fury.
"You little b***h " Austin hissed.
Before he could attack Maya grabbed a dumpster, swung herself up to the fire escape and climbed up into the night.
"Catch her!" Austin roared. "Don't let her leave this block!"
Thirty minutes later Maya collapsed through a window into an abandoned room.
She was shaking, covered in rainwater, grease and bruises. Her hands shook as she ripped off her mask. She fell to her knees gasping for air and cried.
Austin knows. This isn't a school drama anymore; it's a hunt. He's going to use her family to force her into an engagement.
"I need time, " she sobbed. "I just need time."
In the morning Maya sat in her chemistry class looking hollow. She had covered up the bruise on her jaw. Hidden her exhaustion behind glasses. She was scared waiting for Austin's men to come for her.
The lab door opened.
Jaxon walked in looking feral. His uniform was messy. His knuckles were bruised from a fight. His eyes were bloodshot scanning the room intensely.
He had lost his mate and his inner beast was driving him crazy.
He marched down the aisle, his aura making several students whimper. He stopped at Maya's desk.
Maya held her breath, her eyes fixed on her notebook.
Jaxon slammed his hands on her desk leaning down close to her. His scent enveloped her in a mix of pine, mint and anger.
"Look at me Princess, " Jaxon growled.
Maya slowly raised her head, her hands trembling. She looked into his eyes. "J-Jaxon?"
Jaxon's nostrils flared. He leaned closer, his eyes raking over her face, stopping at her jawline, where the concealer was cracking. A spark of recognition flashed in his gaze as he caught her scent.
Jaxon froze. The room went silent.
He stared at her his jaw dropping as the pieces clicked into place. The kicks, her height, her eyes and the bond that had been torturing him.
His school enemy. His masked mate.
Before Jaxon could speak the PA system crackled to life. The headmaster's voice echoed through the room.
"Will student Maya Silvertooth please report to the ballroom immediately? Your father and Lord Austin Vance are waiting to finalize your emergency marriage binding.”
