The chemistry lab was completely silent. It was like all the sound had been sucked out of the room. The headmaster's voice was no longer coming from the PA system. Instead there was a humming noise that was making Maya's nerves feel all jittery. Every single person in the classroom turned to look at the back row. People started whispering away. Their voices were sharp and mean.
"Is this an emergency binding?" someone asked.
"With Lord Vance? She is really lucky " another person said.
"Look at her, she looks like she is about to pass out. What a person " someone else said.
Maya did not hear any of them. She was totally focused on the man standing over her desk. Jaxon had not moved. His big tattooed hands were still on the desk making a frame around her body.. He was breathing really fast and his chest was moving up and down. He was clearly in shock. The gray color of his eyes was gone, replaced by a black that seemed to be sucking in all the light from the room.
Jaxon's eyes were moving fast looking at different parts of Maya's face. He looked at her glasses, her lip and her jaw. "Jaxon..." Maya said, her voice above a whisper.
Jaxon's body shook violently. He made a painful sound that was a mix of an animal's growl and a man's cry. He had been teasing Maya. Treating her badly for weeks but it turned out he had feelings for her all along.
"It's you, " Jaxon whispered, his voice cracking. He did not care that there were thirty students watching them. He did not care that the teacher was frozen in place. "I know it's you, " he said.
"Jaxon please " Maya whispered, looking at the door. "The ballroom. Austin is -"
"Hes trying to bind you " Jaxon growled, understanding what was happening. His alpha power exploded out of him making the glass beakers on the lab tables rattle. "He knew who you were. That's why he touched you at the banquet. That's why he was looking for you night."
"Maya Silvertooth!" the chemistry teacher finally said, pointing towards the hallway. "You need to go to the ballroom right now. Do not keep your family waiting."
Maya stood up slowly, her knees shaking. She did not have her mask or her special spray to protect herself. She was totally exposed.. She was not going to back down.
"I have to go, " Maya said softly, looking at Jaxon. "If I don't show up my father will send people to get me. I need to know what they're planning."
Jaxon reached out. Touched Maya's wrist. The moment their skin touched a white light flashed, showing everyone that they were meant to be together. The classroom gasped in shock. Jaxon's grip on Maya's wrist got tighter showing that he was not going to let her go.
"You're not marrying Maya " Jaxon said, his voice firm and scary. "I don't care what papers have been signed. If he tries to put a ring on your finger I'll hurt him in front of everyone."
"Let me go first, " Maya whispered, pulling her hand away from Jaxon. "Watch the doors."
The grand ballroom of Lunar Crest Academy was a fancy room. There were crystal lights hanging from the ceiling making the room look really pretty. Maya's father, Alpha Silvertooth was standing at the end of the room looking at her with cold eyes. Beside him was Thomas, his assistant.
Austin Vance was standing in the center of the room looking really handsome and confident. He smiled when Maya walked in. "Ah my fiancée, " he said. "We were starting to think you got lost."
Maya walked forward her shoes clicking on the stone floor. She stopped ten feet away from them looking submissive. "Father, what's going on?" she asked. "The PA system said something about an emergency binding..."
"Your safety is at risk Maya " her father said, his voice cold. "Lord Vance's people think there are people around the academy. At night, someone who looks like you was seen in the bad part of town. To keep you safe the Vance Syndicate wants to do the binding ceremony today."
Thomas stepped forward holding an old leather box. He opened it to show a pair of silver-and-gold cuffs. "We will do a binding here to secure the alliance " Austin said, taking a step towards Maya. His eyes looked happy. Mean at the same time. "Come here Maya. Let me protect you."
Maya looked at the cuffs. Remembering her past life. She thought about being trapped and helpless. No, she thought. She took a step back looking strong and fierce. "I refuse, " she said, her voice loud and clear.
Her father got really angry. "What did you say? You child -"
"I said no, " Maya repeated, looking at Austin. "The Silvertooth Pack can't force a binding if I claim asylum under a territory's protection."
Austin's smile started to fade. ". What rival territory would protect you Maya? You have no friends. You have no power."
"She has me, " a loud fierce voice said.
The big oak doors of the ballroom burst. Jaxon walked in. He was followed by a group of people from the rogue pack faction of Lunar Crest Academy. Jaxon's eyes were pure black. His alpha power was radiating out of him. He marched down the center of the ballroom standing between Maya and Austin.
"Touch her again Vance " Jaxon hissed, his claws out. ". I'll start a war that will destroy your syndicate.”
