Anita’s POV The room fell into stunned quiet. Marcus handed Jerry a document, which Jerry scanned with his sharp blue eyes. Every second that went by clouded his face. I took a deep breath. I had no idea what was in the file, but I could tell it was awful by the way Jerry's jaw tightened. He looked up at last. His voice was controlled and low. "What is this?" Marcus grinned and took a step forward. "Proof," he said with ease. Show that Anita is not who she claims to be. She has been deceiving you from the start. Jerry's hand gripped the paper more tightly. "Anita?" My ribs were struck by my heart. "Whatever that says, Jerry, it's not—" Marcus interrupted me. "Untrue?" A chilly laugh escaped his lips. "Read it aloud, Jerry, please." Jerry looked at the page again, then back at me. That's when I realized. He thought so. My stomach turned over. "Anita, what did you do?" His tone was abrasive and demanding. "Be honest with me." "I—" I couldn't get my words out. How could I respond? That I been set up by Marcus? That all of the information in that file was false? I stepped forward unsteadily. "Please, Jerry, you must pay attention to me." His face grew stern. "I don't have any obligations." My heart fell. Marcus laughed. "Oh, the traditional treachery. Jerry, you trusted her, didn't you? Give her access to your house and your life. In faux sympathy, he shook his head. "And now see where you ended up." Jerry balled his fingers into fists. I briefly believed he was going to strike Marcus. Then his eyes came back to me. Cold, far away. "Leave." The words cut like a razor through me. I stepped back. "What?" "You heard me." He spoke in an icy tone. "Please leave my house." I looked at him, feeling a wave of incredulity. "Jerry, you're not getting—" "I don't have to comprehend," he yelled. "Your lies are over." My chest twisted with pain. I felt like screaming, to give him a shake. To help him realize the reality. But he was already looking the other way. Marcus gave me a triumphant smirk. Furthermore, I had never felt so isolated. When I left the mansion, the night air felt chilly. With my head racing, I threw my arms about myself. Now what? I had nowhere to go. No one to look to. I inhaled deeply in an attempt to slow my heartbeat. Then I heard footsteps. Before I could respond, my mouth was slammed shut. I felt a wave of panic. A powerful arm encircled my waist and pulled me back. I thrashed and kicked, struggling, but my assailant was too powerful. A recognizable voice said quietly in my ear, "Shh." Marcus. I felt terrified. His hand blocked my voice as I tried to scream. "You ought to have avoided this, my love," he said. "You're accompanying me now." He pulled me in the direction of a black vehicle parked close to the gate. My fingernails dug into his arm as I twisted in his hold. "Give me a break!" I let out a gasp. Marcus merely chuckled. "No chance." He pushed me into the car after yanking open the door. The door slammed shut before I could even turn. I sprang for the lockable handle. Marcus grinned as he got into the driver's seat. "I'm going to have a little conversation with you." My heart raced. I needed to leave. I have to The night was broken by the sound of tires screeching. I saw headlights speeding toward us as I turned just in time. Jerry's vehicle. I gasped. He was on his way to me. However, then— A CRASH! The whole car rocked from the crash. The sound of glass breaking and metal wrenching drowned out my scream— Then everything turned dark. As I staggered out of the cat, the chilly night air pricked my flesh. My eyes were burning with tears, but I fought the need to cry. I had been kicked out by Jerry. Once more. For a final glance, I turned around. Behind me, the magnificent estate towered, its golden lights gleaming against the night sky. I had nowhere to go. No cash. No security. I balled my fists up. This was not the end of it. However, a black car in front of me screeched to a stop before I could move. My stomach turned over. Before I could yell, the back door swung open, and I was pulled inside by a powerful hand. "Give me up!" I kicked frantically as I fought. The door closed with a slam. I saw Marcus's ruthless smirk in the shadows. "Are you going somewhere, my love?" I went cold. His enjoyment glinted in his dark eyes. "Tsk, tsk. Jerry is a true i***t. Discarding you like trash. His breath was hot across my skin as he leaned closer. "I'm lucky because I know how valuable you are." My heart was racing. Marcus’s men sat on either side of me. No escape. I forced my voice to remain steady as I swallowed hard. "What are you looking for?" His grin got bigger. "Oh, Anita. You are already aware. The vehicle accelerated into the night. Marcus's car made a fast turn, and the tires squealed. I tightened my jaw. I needed to leave. I moved a little and checked the door handle, which was locked. Without glancing at me, Marcus continued, "Don't even try it." "You won't get anywhere." I scowled at him. "Jerry is coming to get me." Marcus chuckled. "That's the strategy." I went cold. The vehicle accelerated. My heart halted as I looked into the side mirror. Headlights. We were being chased by a sleek black car. Jerry. I let out a gasp. He was on his way. When Marcus saw, he swore. "f**k it." He produced a firearm and gave it to the driver. "Take him away." The motorist hit the throttle pedal. As we raced through the streets, the city lights became hazy. My heart thumping, I pushed myself against the seat. Jerry wasn't going to slow down. The two vehicles swerved through traffic in a risky manner. Honking. Tires that screech. Anarchy. "More quickly!" Marcus let out a shout. The driver made a sharp swerve— BAM! Jerry's vehicle collided with ours. We whirled out of control, and I shouted. The world swayed. The glass broke. A loud crash Then there was quiet. My vision was swirling as I strained for air. Jerry's car rolling over was the last thing I saw— Then everything turned dark.
