Anita’s POV
The room was black and cold, and there was a steady, piercing clap.
I stiffened.
From the darkness, a woman emerged, her shoes clicking on the concrete.
In stark contrast to her cold manner, she was tall, graceful, and wearing a deep crimson dress. Her lips twisted into a knowing smirk, and her keen features were framed by long, dark hair.
I knew her right away.
Lang, Victoria.
The sister of Christopher Lang.
My spine tingled at the realization.
"Darling, are you surprised to see me?" She spoke in a pleasant, almost humorous voice.
I forced myself to remain calm and swallowed hard. "What are you looking for?"
Victoria pretended to think as she c****d her head. Yes, I did think about simply killing you. However, I then asked myself, "Why waste such a useful little pawn?"
I balled my fists up. "Pawn? Whatever game you and your brother are playing has nothing to do with me.
The sound of her laughter was one of harsh amusement. "Oh, Anita. Whether you like it or not, you are in this. You are a problem because you have become too close to Jerry.
I was not afraid. What comes next? You imprison me indefinitely?
Victoria took a step toward me and crouched in front of me. I was forced to look into her sharp eyes as her fingers tapped my chin.
"No, my love," she said. "I destroy Jerry Flynn with you."
Her comments made me wince, but I didn't turn my head away.
Jerry.
He would be searching for me, I knew.
Would he discover me in time, though?
I had to wait.
I needed to get out.
Victoria crossed her arms and straightened. "Anita, you'll collaborate. Or I'll see to it that Jerry bears the consequences.
I clenched my teeth. "I'm not afraid of you."
Her smirk grew. “Oh, you should be scared.”
I knew she wasn’t bluffing.
And I was afraid of that.
My wrists throbbed with pain.
Every movement caused painful sensations to go through my arms as the ropes that bound my hands stabbed into my skin. Whatever Victoria had done to me before confining me to this chilly, windowless room left my head beating.
I needed to leave.
I moved a little, trying the controls. Close. There's no simple way out.
Anita, think.
I froze as I heard footsteps outside. The heavy door creaked open a moment later, and Victoria walked in, looking way too proud of herself.
She tilted her head and replied, "Well, my dear." "Jerry Flynn is searching for you by uprooting the city."
A beat skipped in my chest.
Jerry.
Was he trying to find me?
I made myself maintain a neutral expression. "I know you're disappointed. Didn't you want him to disregard my disappearance?
Victoria laughed as she ran her finger along the chair's edge where I was strapped. "Oh no, Anita. That's precisely what I desired. Jerry's emotions are his vulnerability. You are also his biggest distraction now.
I tightened my jaw. "I don't matter to him."
"Are you certain?" A knowing smirk curved her lips as she bent down. "So why is he trying so hard to find you?"
Something hopeful? flitted across my head, but I pushed it away. There was no time to speculate about Jerry's emotions at this point.
I had to concentrate.
"What are you doing?" I asked, maintaining a steady tone.
Victoria's face grew serious. "Because my family was destroyed by Jerry Flynn." He caused my brother and me to lose everything.
I scowled. "You believe that taking me hostage will make a difference?"
"Oh, my dear." Her voice grew cold as she knelt next to me. "You are only the first step."
Pulling something from her pocket, she straightened.
I felt sick to my stomach upon seeing that.
A telephone.
Additionally, on the screen. An image shows Jerry, looking enraged as he stands outside his car.
"He's not far away," Victoria thought. "Should we wait and see what occurs next?"
My chest was filled with dread.
I needed to figure out how to get out.
Before it was too late.
As I looked at the phone screen, my hands began to shake. There was Jerry. Looking.
However, he was unaware of what he was getting into.
I had to move quickly.
I looked up at Victoria, who continued to stare at the picture of Jerry. She held the phone too loosely. If only I could divert her attention...
I gathered a smile as I swallowed. "You're doing something wrong."
Victoria's eyes met mine abruptly. "Pardon me?"
"You believe you are more intelligent than Jerry? Can you beat him? I gave a headshake. "You have no acquaintance with him."
Victoria squinted her eyes. "Oh, but I do."
I laughed a little, even though my stomach was churning with anxiety. "No, you don't. You would be aware that Jerry is unfair if you did. He has a plan all the time.
That was untrue. I didn't know what Jerry was thinking at the moment.
Victoria, however, was unaware of that.
Her jaw clenched as her fingers became tighter around the phone. "Without his riches and influence, he is nothing. He will be just another man after I take that away.
I c****d my head. "Did Marcus tell you that?"
She winced.
Bingo.
I now had proof that Marcus was involved, even if I had suspected it. I only needed to exert more effort.
I gave a loud sigh. Whoa. Aren't you merely a pawn in Marcus's scheme?
Victoria's angry face contorted. "I'm not a pawn!"
"So why are you handling his shady business?" I fired back. "Does Marcus's use of you do not bother you?"
She relaxed her hold on the phone.
This was my opportunity.
I pulled forward with all my effort and slammed into her. The phone fell out of her grasp as she gasped and staggered backward.
It fell to the ground.
Before she could get hold of it, I kicked it away. "Sorry."
Victoria's anger blazed in her eyes. "You little"
I didn't hold off until she was done. I slammed my chair against her legs and jerked it forward. She gave a painful yelp.
I grabbed the cords around my wrists, using the diversion. Victoria hadn't realized how determined I was, and the knot was looser than before.
I ignored the sting and twisted my hands before yanking them free.
Victoria lunged at me, but I ducked under her and picked up the phone from the ground.
Now I had evidence.
I bolted for the door.
I had just arrived when I heard a voice behind me.
"Anita, you'll regret this!"
I continued. Grasping the phone as if it were my life, I ran out of the room and into the dim corridor.
Because it did now.
I clutched the phone as I ran down the dark hallway, my pulse racing. Behind me, I could still hear Victoria's irate yelling. She would send her men after me at any moment.
I needed to hurry.
I almost ran into a guard as I turned a corner. I didn't allow him time to react, even though his eyes widened in disbelief. I sprinted for the closest door, dropped low, and pushed by him.
Locked.
"f**k it!" I hissed.
The guard made a speedy recovery. "Hey! Stop
I turned on my heel and ran the other way, slipping through another corridor. My body screamed in protest as my breath came in ragged gasps.
Then I noticed a window directly ahead.
I had no other choice.
I slammed my shoulder against it as I pushed forward. The glass remained intact.
Behind me, footsteps thundered.
"Grab her!" Victoria let out a scream.
No option. From a nearby table, I picked up a hefty vase and threw it against the window. Sharp pieces of glass rained down as it broke.
With my heart beating, I climbed up onto the precipice. Even if the descent wasn't very far, it was painful.
But death was certain if you stayed here.
I took a big breath and leaped.
The wind blew by me. Pain jolted through my ribs as I fell hard onto my side. Despite my moan, I made myself get up.
Pain had no place here.
I stumbled forward, toward the alleyway's shadows. All I could think about was getting this phone to Jerry.
Marcus could have been destroyed by the evidence I had.
But before I could move forward, the alley was filled with headlights.
In front of me, a black car screamed to a stop.
I went cold.
The door opened.
Jerry left with an unreadable expression.
I felt a wave of relief. "Jerry! You're not going to believe what I—
He grabbed my wrist and pulled me forward before I could finish. He had a firm, nearly bruised grip.
"Are you even aware of what you did?" His voice was low and menacing.
I blinked, perplexed. "What? I
His look pierced my own. "Climb into the vehicle. Right now.
There was a problem.
As I looked into his eyes, my gut wrenched.
This was not a respite.
This was rage.
And I didn't know why.
