CHAPTER 3: Partners

1455 Words
Elena hoped she wouldn’t see Leo again that day. After what happened in the library, she needed space and time to clear her head and remind herself that whatever tension existed between them meant nothing. At least that’s what she kept telling herself. She walked into her morning class and slid into an empty seat near the middle of the lecture hall. Students filled the room slowly, chatting and settling in. Elena pulled out her notebook just as the professor walked in. “Good morning, everyone,” he said. “Today we’ll be starting a new project.” A collective groan moved through the room. The professor smiled like he had expected that reaction. “This will be a partner assignment. You’ll be working in pairs for the next three weeks.” Elena froze. Partner assignments were never good news. “Your partner will be someone chosen randomly,” the professor continued. “This project is worth forty percent of your final grade, so choose to cooperate wisely.” Elena felt a sudden sense of dread. The professor began reading the list of names. “Daniel and Sarah.” “Elijah and Mark.” “Elena…” Her stomach tightened. “…and Leo.” The room seemed to go silent around her. You have got to be kidding me. Slowly, Elena turned her head. Leo was sitting two rows behind her. And he was already looking at her. That same knowing expression rested on his face, like the universe had just handed him the most entertaining situation possible. Elena quickly looked away. This couldn’t be happening. When the class ended, students began grouping with their partners. Elena stayed seated, hoping Leo would just… disappear. No such luck. “Looks like we’re partners.” His voice came from right beside her. Elena looked up reluctantly. Leo stood there with his usual relaxed posture, hands in his pockets, his expression far too calm for someone who had just complicated her life. “This is a bad idea,” she said. Leo raised an eyebrow. “It’s a project, Elena. Not a marriage.” “That’s not what I meant.” He leaned slightly closer to her desk. “I know.” Her heart skipped again. Elena grabbed her bag quickly and stood up. “Let’s just finish the project and keep things simple.” Leo tilted his head slightly. “Simple?” “Yes.” His eyes held hers for a long moment. Then he smiled slowly. “You and I have never been simple.” Elena felt heat rise to her face. “Meet me at the study room tonight,” Leo continued. “We should start early.” She hesitated. Spending hours alone with Leo sounded like the worst possible idea. But this project was worth forty percent of her grade. She sighed. “Fine. Eight o’clock.” Leo nodded once. Then he walked away. But before leaving the classroom, he glanced back at her. And Elena suddenly realized something that made her stomach tighten. Being forced to work together meant one thing. For the next three weeks… There would be no escaping the tension between them. And if she wasn’t careful, that tension might finally turn into something neither of them could control. The thought stayed with her long after the class ended, she thought of it while walking in the hallway. The normal noise the student made all through the hallway wasn’t doing anything to what she was thinking, it didn’t feel normal anymore. Elena tried to focus on her next lecture, note and her phone, anything that wasn’t about Leo but it didn’t work. Because it’s not about the tension between them but what she was expecting. The thought of what he said “ Eight o’clock, study room” and knowing they’re are going to be alone, the thought of it made her uneasy, not because she didn’t trust him but because she didn’t fully trust herself around him, and that was the problem. By the time evening came, Elena had convinced herself she was overthinking everything. She said “ it just a project we need to do together nothing else.” She repeated those words in her head as she walked toward to the study room. When she pushed the door open, Leo was already there, seated comfortably, laptop open, papers spread out in front of him like he had been there for a while. He glanced up when she entered, “ you’re late”. Elena nodded slightly, it’s just three minutes, she dropped her bag down and she noticed that he was kinda happy but she didn’t ask or say anything to him at that moment, she ignored it and took a seat opposite him, far enough to feel safe but close enough to still his presence. “Let’s just focus,” she said. Leo didn’t argue, he turned his laptop slightly toward her, “Here’s the outline.” They started working at first it was exactly what she hoped for, they discussed ideas, divided sections and shared their notes. For a while it almost felt like things were back to how they used to be, but then their hands brushed accidentally when reaching for the same paper. Things began to change, Leo leaned close and started explaining something on his laptop, his voice dropped slightly when he spoke directly to her. Elena felt it immediately, that familiar tension, quiet but intense. She shifted slightly in her seat, trying to ignore it but it gets harder because Leo wasn’t pulling away. He was becoming more aware of it too. “You’re distracted,” he said suddenly. Elena didn’t look up, she said “ I’m working.” Leo asked her why she was distracted without taking his eyes from her, she sighed softly and finally met his gaze. “What do you want me to say… Leo?” He leaned back slightly, studying her and then he said “The truth.” Her heart skipped and then she said you wouldn’t like it. “Try me” Leo said without hesitating, the room went quiet and then she looked away and said “ that’s a bad idea,” he didn’t respond immediately but then quiet he asked “why?” Because being around you like this….. she hesitated and finally spoke out….it complicates things. His expression didn’t change but his eyes did. “Things were already complicated,” he said. Elena didn’t argue because they both know it’s the truth and there was nothing to argue about. Instead she picked up her pen again and said “ we should keep working.” Leo watched her for a moment longer, then nodded “okay.” They continued but the silence between them was no longer comfortable, it was heavy and filled with everything they just said and the ones they haven’t. Time passed slowly, the room was quiet as the night fall, at some point Elena realized she wasn’t writing anymore because her thoughts were on Leo. A sudden knock on the door broke the silence, Elena looked up instantly, Leo did too. The door opened slightly, Maya standing at the entrance, her eyes moved from Leo to Elena. And for a brief moment no one spoke, the tension shifted again but this it was different. Maya smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “ I hope I’m not interrupting” she said softly Leo replied “we’re working.” Maya nodded slowly, stepping inside and said “ I can see that.” Her gaze lingered on Elena for just a second longer than necessary, not friendly but observant. Elena felt it immediately, Maya wasn’t guessing anymore, she was noticing and that changed everything. Elena straightened slightly. “We’re almost done for tonight.” Maya smiled again. “That’s good.” But she didn’t leave, instead, she stayed there. Watching. And in that moment, Elena understood something clearly. This wasn’t just about her and Leo anymore. Maya was part of it now. Whether they wanted her to be or not. And whatever this tension was… It wasn’t hidden anymore. Not completely. Not safely. Leo closed his laptop slowly. “We’ll continue tomorrow,” he said. Elena nodded. “Yes.” She stood quickly, gathering her things. She needed air. “Space” Because the room suddenly felt too small, too full. As she walked toward the door, she could feel both of them watching her. Leo. Maya. The tension, everything. And as she stepped out into the quiet hallway …one thing became painfully clear. This wasn’t going to stay simple. Not the project. Not the feelings. Not the space between them, Because now… It wasn’t just growing It was being seen.
