Thirteen ABOUT AN HOUR LATER, the door to the Rectory opens. I don’t even look up from my desk. I don’t have to. I know who it is. I recognize her footsteps. Usually, after what almost happened to us, I’d run out of my office and grab her in my arms in a huge hug, thankful that she’s still with me and we’re both ok. Not today. Not yet, anyway. “Ahem.” I look up. Helen’s standing in the doorway of my office. From her crossed arms, firm jaw, and blue eyes ablaze, I know what’s going to happen. We’re about to have our first major fight. Bring it on. She steps inside and closes the door behind her. “Before I say anything,” she begins, “are you OK?” “Yes I am, and you?” “Yes.” She takes a deep breath and then explodes, “Thomas Jude Greer! Don’t you ever pull a stunt like that again!
