10 Rain pattered on Larani’s living-room window, a thick drizzle that left streaks on the glass. The sun had not yet gone down, but it was dark enough that she had to turn on the lamp on the wooden table next to her couch. Larani sat on that couch with a cup and saucer in one hand, steam wafting up with a fruity scent. Today’s visit to the courtroom had been the most activity she’d had since being removed from her post as head of the Justice Keepers. Granted, it had only been a few days, but she had spent most of that time reading the works of Keepers who had died centuries ago, reorganizing her apartment, watching the news… She felt helpless.
