Chapter 16:The unders of cover night

1189 Words
The four friends slipped into Lyra's house, escaping the wicked stares and insults from the citizens of Ashwood. The atmosphere inside was tense, with Lyra's emotions still reeling from Thane's confession. The sound of the door closing behind them was a welcome relief, shutting out the hostile world outside. Astrid broke the silence, her voice indignant as she paced back and forth across the room. "Those people are stupid. A man does something wrong, and they blame it on the woman. It's always the same story." Lyra shook her head, her voice barely above a whisper as she collapsed onto the couch. "No, they're right. How could I have been so ignorant to Thane's feelings? I thought he was being nice, trying to help me out..." Her words trailed off, her eyes cast downward in self-recrimination. Cormac placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, his eyes filled with compassion. "It's okay, Lyra. None of this is your fault. Sometimes we never know how someone else feels about us until we ask them. You can't blame yourself for not seeing the signs." Kael nodded in agreement, his eyes locking onto Lyra's as he leaned against the wall. For a moment, they just stared at each other, the connection between them palpable. Then Kael broke the eye contact, his expression softening. "Besides, you've never been in a relationship. It's normal for you to not notice Thane's feelings." Lyra's eyes narrowed, a hint of amusement dancing in their depths. "How do you know I've never been in a relationship?" She raised an eyebrow, her voice laced with curiosity. Kael's smirk was quick and easy, his eyes glinting with mirth. "See, it's boldly written on your forehead." He chuckled, the sound low and husky, making Lyra's lips curve upward in a smile. Astrid and Cormac laughed out loud, the tension in the room dissipating. Lyra felt a weight lift off her shoulders as her friends' laughter wrapped around her, comforting her. As they settled into the comfortable silence, Lyra felt a sense of gratitude toward her friends. They had a way of making her see things from a different perspective, of lifting her up when she was down. And in that moment, she knew she could face whatever challenges lay ahead, as long as they were by her side. The room was filled with the warm glow of the setting sun, casting a golden light over the group. Lyra's house, once a symbol of solitude, now felt like a sanctuary, a place where she could be herself without fear of judgment. As the silence stretched out, Lyra finally spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper. "I feel so guilty. I had no idea Thane felt that way about me." Cormac's expression was gentle. "You can't blame yourself for not seeing the signs, Lyra. Thane's feelings were his own responsibility, not yours." Astrid nodded in agreement. "Besides, you can't control how someone else feels. All you can do is be true to yourself." Kael pushed off from the wall, his eyes never leaving Lyra's face. "And you are true to yourself, Lyra. That's what makes you so amazing." Lyra's heart skipped a beat at Kael's words, her face warming with a gentle blush. She felt a sense of wonder at the way Kael always knew how to make her feel better, how to lift her up when she was down. As the night wore on, the four friends sat together in comfortable silence, the only sound the crackling of the fireplace. Lyra felt a sense of peace wash over her, a sense of belonging she had never felt before. And as she looked around at her friends, she knew that she would always cherish this moment, this feeling of being surrounded by people who truly cared about her. The four friends crept through the darkened streets of Ashwood, their footsteps echoing off the stone buildings. They had decided to sneak into Professor Nightshade's office, determined to uncover more information about the Mind Stone. Cormac hesitated, his eyes scanning the shadows. "I don't know, guys. Breaking into the professor's office feels wrong." Astrid rolled her eyes. "Come on, Cormac. We need to do this." Kael grinned, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Besides, it'll be fun." Cormac sighed, his shoulders sagging in defeat. "Fine. But if we get caught, I'm blaming you guys." The four friends slipped into the alleyway beside Professor Nightshade's office, their hearts pounding with excitement. Kael worked his magic on the lock, and the door creaked open. As they entered the office, Lyra moved quickly to the bookshelves, her eyes scanning the titles. Astrid followed close behind, her eyes scanning the shelves for any sign of ancient magic. Cormac hesitated, his eyes scanning the room. "I'll check the desk drawers." Kael grinned, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "And I'll check the hidden compartments." As they searched, the silence was punctuated by the creaking of old books and the rustling of papers. Suddenly, Cormac let out a triumphant cry. "Guys, I found something!" he whispered, his eyes scanning the pages of a dusty old book. Lyra rushed over, her eyes scanning the pages. "What is it?" Cormac's eyes locked on Lyra's. "It's a map, leading to the Celestial Oasis. It's said to be the location of the Mind Stone." Astrid's eyes widened in excitement. "This is it. This is what we've been searching for." As they carefully copied the map, Astrid suddenly let out a cry of excitement. "Guys, I found something else!" she whispered, her eyes scanning the pages of an ancient spell book. Lyra rushed over, her eyes scanning the pages. "What is it?" Astrid's eyes locked on Lyra's. "It's the oldest spell book I've ever seen. It's got forgotten powerful spells that could help us on our journey." Cormac's eyes widened in excitement. "Take it. We might need it." As Astrid carefully tucked the spell book into her bag, Kael's head suddenly snapped up, his ears perked up in alert. "What is it?" Lyra whispered, her eyes locked on Kael's. Kael's eyes locked on Lyra's. "I hear footsteps. The professor is coming." The four friends quickly gathered their things, their hearts pounding with excitement. They slipped out of the office, back into the night, just as the door creaked open. Professor Nightshade stood in the doorway, his eyes scanning the room. "Who's there?" he called out, his voice echoing through the empty office. The four friends held their breath, frozen in the shadows. Then, without making a sound, they turned and ran, disappearing into the night. As they emerged from the alleyway, Lyra let out a triumphant cry. "We did it! We found the location of the Mind Stone." Astrid grinned, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "And I got the oldest spell book ever." Cormac let out a nervous laugh. "Too close for comfort." Kael chuckled, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "But we made it out alive." The four friends shared a laugh, their bond stronger than ever. They knew that they still had a long journey ahead of them, but they were ready for whatever challenges lay ahead.
