1025 Words
Lyra slowly opened her eyes, groggily taking in her surroundings. She was in a small, secluded space outside Ashwood, surrounded by trees and the sounds of nature. Astrid lay beside her, still fast asleep, her chest rising and falling with each gentle breath. Lyra sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. She looked around, taking in the peaceful atmosphere. Cormac was outside, gathering wood and roasting a bush rat over an open flame. The smell of cooked meat wafted through the air, making Lyra's stomach growl with hunger. As she stood up, she noticed Kael on the other side of the clearing. He was bent over, his mouth attached to the neck of a bush rat. Lyra's eyes widened in shock as she realized what she was seeing. She felt a shiver run down her spine, but she couldn't look away. Kael sensed her presence and quickly cleared his throat, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. He stood up, his eyes locking onto Lyra's. "Ah, hey," he 6said, trying to sound nonchalant. Lyra's voice was barely above a whisper. "Hi." Kael walked over to her, his eyes locked on hers. "Hey," he repeated, his smile a little wider this time. Lyra's gaze was intense. "That's the first time I've seen...that," she said, her eyes flicking to the bush rat lying on the ground. Kael raised an eyebrow. "A vampire feeding?" he asked, his tone light. Lyra nodded, her eyes still fixed on his. "Yes. And you...you've been eating normal food since we met." Kael shrugged, his shoulders rolling effortlessly. "Well, after 250 years, I've learned to control my urge for human blood." Lyra's eyes narrowed. "Okay...Have you ever killed humans before? Sucked them dry?" she asked, her voice laced with a mix of curiosity and fear. Kael's expression turned somber, his eyes clouding over. "Yes. During my first years as a vampire, I was new to it...I didn't know how to control myself." Lyra's voice was barely above a whisper. "How many?" Kael's jaw clenched, his eyes flashing with a hint of anger. "Enough," he growled. Lyra's eyes widened in surprise. "I'm sorry," she said, her voice soft. Kael's expression softened, his eyes locking onto Lyra's. "It's not your fault," he said, his voice low and gentle. Lyra's voice was laced with curiosity. "Were you turned into a vampire, or...?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with interest. Kael's eyes seemed to cloud over, his expression turning enigmatic. "I was born a vampire," he said, his voice low and mysterious. Lyra's eyes widened in surprise. "But vampires don't reproduce..." Kael's smile was enigmatic. "Let's just say I'm a special case," he said, his eyes glinting with amusement. With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Lyra with more questions than answers. She watched him go, her eyes fixed on his retreating back. She felt a shiver run down her spine, but she couldn't help feeling drawn to him. Astrid stirred beside her, yawning widely. "What's going on?" she asked, her voice groggy. Lyra turned to her, a smile on her face. "Just Kael being Kael," she said, her eyes sparkling with amusement. Astrid's eyes narrowed. "What did he do now?" she asked, her voice laced with curiosity. Lyra's smile widened. "Let's just say he showed me his true nature," she said, her eyes glinting with excitement. As Lyra and Astrid talked, Cormac walked over to them, a small smile on his face. "Hey, sleepyheads," he said, his eyes crinkling at the corners. Astrid smiled back at him, her eyes sparkling with warmth. "Hey, Cormac," she said, her voice soft. Cormac handed Astrid a small piece of cooked meat, his fingers brushing against hers. Astrid's eyes flicked up to his, and for a moment, they just looked at each other. Lyra noticed the exchange and smiled to herself. She had always known that Astrid and Cormac had a deep connection, but she had never seen it manifested so clearly. As they ate, Cormac sat down beside Astrid, his shoulder touching hers. Astrid didn't pull away, instead, she leaned into him, her head resting on his shoulder. Cormac wrapped his arm around her, holding her close. "You okay?" he asked, his voice low and gentle. Astrid nodded, her eyes closing. "Yeah, I'm fine," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Cormac held her for a moment, his eyes fixed on Lyra. Lyra smiled back at him, her eyes shining with understanding. Cormac and Astrid's connection was rooted in trust and mutual respect. They had formed a strong bond over the past few weeks, relying on each other for support and protection. Astrid admired Cormac's strength and loyalty, while Cormac appreciated Astrid's intelligence and determination. As they sat together, Lyra could feel the tension between them. It was palpable, a living, breathing thing. She knew that Cormac and Astrid's feelings for each other went beyond friendship, but she also knew that they were hesitant to acknowledge it. And that was what made it complicated. As the day wore on, the four of them stayed in the safe space, resting and recuperating from the previous night's events. They ate, drank, and tended to their wounds, grateful for the brief respite from the danger that lurked outside. But as the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the forest, they knew it was time to prepare themselves for what lay ahead. They gathered their belongings, checked their weapons, and steeled themselves for the journey back to Ashwood. As they stood at the entrance of the safe space, Lyra took a deep breath, her eyes scanning the surrounding area. "Let's do this," she said, her voice firm and resolute. Kael nodded, his eyes gleaming with a fierce intensity. "Stay sharp," he warned, his voice low and deadly. Astrid and Cormac exchanged a brief glance, their faces set with determination. Together, the four of them stepped out of the safe space and into the unknown, ready to face whatever dangers awaited them in Ashwood. And with that, they disappeared into the trees, their footsteps quiet on the forest floor, their hearts pounding with anticipation and fear.
