Aww…you look like something the rat dragged in,” Adrian chuckled harshly and stepped forward. He dipped his hand into his pocket and brought out some dollar notes which he threw on Lucian's horrified face.
“Here! That's money for compensation. Use it to feed your poor stinking self,”
There was a pause, then Harper joined in the mockery. “You suddenly went dumb? You know most people would kneel to say thank you for the money,”
Lucian could feel his pulse racing faster and faster. His eyes brimmed with tears, but he refused to let them fall. He had to tuck in his anger even though it was coursing through his veins, threatening to explode.
How could this happen to him? Besides Harper, no one in his school truly accepted him. She was the only one who gave him a reason to smile again. While the other students considered him a dirty, weak and poor orphan, she stood by his side and always cared for him.
Damn, but he thought he had a real girlfriend.
Was it all a joke?
How could she betray him like everyone else?
“Why are you doing this? Because he's rich, you betrayed and took my love for granted. Why?” Lucian said, the heartbreak evident in his voice. “I loved you, the least you would have done was reject my proposal back then,”
“You loved me? Come on, let's tell ourselves the truth. Would you date your miserable self if you were a lady? Oh, I see you want me to suffer with you. A classy girl like me? Damn, can you even my skincare?”
“You munched off her like a pathetic leech and you call yourself a man? No dude, you're just a piece of garbage,”
“I'm warning you, stay out of this!"
“You're the one who has blood on his mouth like some tout,” Adrian laughed, heightening the tension in the air.
Harper brought out a marker from her purse and bent to write a remark on Lucian's white t-shirt. It read “POOR SCUM”
She stepped back with a sly smile as if to admire her handwork. Then she sneered. “You don't deserve a classy girl like me. A wealthy man was all I ever needed, but you're nothing but a despicable loser. I regret ever dating a fool like you, so f**k off!”
“I wonder what kind of delusional perverts people employ these days. I can't believe he thinks the girl is in his league,” A customer said and everybody burst out laughing.
“And what's going on here?!” Troy, the manager of the restaurant interjected, announcing his presence.
“It seems you employed a bastard!” Adrian raved. “Can’t you see what this piece of s**t just did?”
“I want him fired or I'll have no choice but to spread negative reviews about this shitty restaurant that harasses its customers,” Harper added, her face sour with anger.
Troy accessed the situation for a moment before turning to Lucian, his eyes burning with fury. “What the hell have you done!”
Lucian clenched his jaws. “None of this is my fault, Sir, and I would appreciate it if you don't jump into conclusions,”
Furious at Lucian's tone, Troy glared. “Apologize to the victims right now!”
“Apologize?” Lucian frowned. “No way, I'm the victim here. They should be the ones doing the apology since they insulted me first!”
The manager rudely slapped Lucian as the customers watched. “f*****g apologize to my customers, or you're fired!”
Lucian nodded sadly before removing the apron on his waist and tossing it on the table. “I'd rather be fired than apologize to these people. You can check the CCTV and realize the mix-up when I'm gone,”
He turned to Harper who had an almost startled look on her face. “You dare mock and betray me like this? You'd regret it, Harper. I promise you,”
“No, I won't,” She shook her head. “I'd rather choke to death than regret dumping a scumbag like you,”
Outside, the cold air slapped his hair back and forth and Lucian felt chilled to the bones as the tears threatened to drop. Fueled with anger, he flicked it off, deciding not to give those brats the luxury of seeing him break.
He bit his lips and made to cross the road when his phone beeped. He paused to look at the screen, expecting to see a sack letter from his boss.
Thump. Beat! Thump. Beat!!
The message on his screen was not from his boss. His breath hitched in his throat and his eyes widened as he read the unexpected words out in a whisper.
“Your account has been credited with ten billion US dollars.”
As the shock coursed through him, his phone rang and he picked it up almost immediately with shaky hands. “Hello…”
“Good day Master Lucian. I'm sure you have received the funds I sent. Please be aware that your billion dollars inheritance is waiting for you. Kindly visit the top floor of Hilleux Establishments this evening for more details. Thank you,”
“Wait…what?” Lucian started, but the call ended before he could continue.
“What the hell…” He cursed as the shock reverberated through his entire body. The last thing he expected after his break up with Harper was some mystery miracle alert.
Staring at the phone for a long time, he wished the figures would change, but they didn't.
It was like they were mocking him by staying still.
His account had been credited with 10 Billion dollars!
Quickly, he hurried to his dormitory for a change of clothes. He had to link up with this mysterious caller. Yes, he was poor, but that didn't mean he some greedy freak. Since this person was mistaking him for some heir, then he had to correct the misunderstanding.
When he arrived at the dormitory, nobody was in the room and he proceeded to change into an old but neatly trimmed blue shirt and black pants.
He was about to wear the pants when the door pushed open and Dorathy, one of his female roommates walked in with her swaying ass. He tried to cover himself with a towel, but it was too late because the lady suddenly crossed the distance between them and slapped him hard on the face.
“Swear you didn't know I was coming in, loser. You stripped yourself naked on purpose to show me what you've got, huh?” Dorathy accused.
“Wh–what are you talking about? I didn't know you were coming. Please don't misunderstand,” He stammered, not wanting to get into another trouble for the day.
The lady scoffed. “It's funny how shameless you are. So because Harper dumped your ass, you're trying to assault and flirt with another lady? Is that how to deal with heartbreak?”
Lucian clenched his jaws, hurt at the words. “I apologize, but I didn't mean to flirt with you. Now please you can either turn around or leave the room until I finish dressing up,”
“Gosh, what a loser,” Dorathy snickered, throwing him a disgusting look before waltzing out of the room.
Lucian sighed and continued dressing up. The news of his breakup had traveled everywhere and the whole school must have known about it by now. He could imagine the horrible things people had to say about him.
A second glance at the wall clock told him he was almost late for his appointment. Shifting the sad thoughts to the back of his mind, he hurried out of the room to the meeting place.
Now, only three thoughts hammered in his head.
Was the ten billion dollars in his account true or was it a sham?
Had the mysterious caller from earlier mistaken his identity for someone else?
Was he really the heir of a billion dollar inheritance?
