Aunt Mary paced back and forth in the living room.
"You know I'm definitely filing a complaint this time". She said.
"For what? Why?"
"Such absurd questions. The Donnovans of course. I've had it up to here!" She motioned to her neck
I wondered what they did now. It wasn't like she was around to witness the party Lucas threw. A thought occurred to me then.
"How'd you know about the party?"
"Silly, I've got eyes and ears everywhere. Think I'd leave town without ensuring your safety?"
Of course my aunt. Always sniffing for gossip. She hid her nosiness with the silly excuse that it was all just for my safety. Suddenly a thought chilled me. She had left someone to spy. Did the someone See me going to Lucas' party? I prayed not.
"You poor thing" she said coming to touch my cheek, concern evident on her face. "And to think you could not read for your exams".
"uh?"
"What with all the noise that stupid Lucas made yesterday. I'm telling you the whole neighborhood complained yesterday".
Wow. I didn't see that happening. My aunt was definitely a telltale, considering the fact that she wasn't even around.
"This neighborhood was a peaceful one..." My aunt rattled on. "But since the Donnovans moved in, not so much".
I wondered who my aunt's spy was. Definitely macmi, i thought immediately. Fat chance of Macmi, the elderly woman who lived across catching me going to Lucas' party. She was as blind as a bat! That was one hell of a spy indeed. But her ears worked just fine. And I was guessing that was all my aunt needed.
"Common let's go". She motioned to me. We had been getting ready to go to the mall.
As soon as we came out of the house we saw Reese Donnovan's Lamborghini pull up in the driveway of his yard. My aunt snorted and ignored him as he got out and waved at us.
"Mary!" he called, as we passed by his yard. "And of course her beautiful niece".
Mr Reese was always charming to me. I found him more amiable than Lucas. All Lucas did was taunt and tease me. Mr Reese's friendliness was genuine.
"Aww common Mary don't be like that".
"Like what?" Aunt Mary turned on him. "I've really had it this time Reese!"
Did she just call him by his first name? This of course, failed to go unnoticed by Reese Donnovan, who had his eyebrows raised in surprise. I guess my aunt had gotten tired of the formal act.
"Your son is a complete nuisance!"
Just then Lucas came out if the car looking as innocent as a day old baby. But I knew he couldn't care less what my aunt had to nag about this time.
"Oh Lucas what'd you do now?" Mr Reese turned to his son in mock anger.
"Nothing Reese". Lucas answered innocently. He turned timidly to aunt Mary. "Good morning Mary".
"What the... I won't tolerate this. It's miss Rajah to you young man. Reese I can't believe you've influenced your son like this!" She seethed.
"Common Mary you aren't that old. Miss Rajah? That sounds like a name for a stiff broad".
Lucas stifled laughter and Aunt Mary flushed red, eyes shooting daggers at the both of them. If looks could kill?
"Enough if this. This is the last straw Mr Donnovan! Your son downright prevented Maury from preparing for her exams. The poor thing couldn't even catch a wink of sleep".
Common aunt, don't go there. I caught Lucas' mischievous smile.
"Of course she slept nice and fine miss Rajah". Lucas said wriggling his eyebrows at me. "I was witness to it".
What the... Alright time for a change of subject.
"She couldn't sleep or study.... " my aunt went on, oblivious of my discomfort and Lucas' mischievous look.
Enough aunt Mary. It's not like you were there. If only my aunt knew what exactly l had done last night. I had spent the night in Lucas freaking Donnovan's room! The thought chilled me. I knew Lucas would never let me live it down.
"It wasn't too much noise". Lucas said to my aunt then winked at me when my aunt wasn't looking. "Common tell them Maury".
Urgh! He was totally blackmailing me! Of course I couldn't let him tell my aunt what really happened. That would make his day I knew.
"Yeah auntie...it wasn't that bad". I mumbled.
Aunt Mary and Mr Donnovan turned surprised to look at me.
"What Maury.... Don't go easy on them now. We're filing a complaint!"
"Aww Maury.. You wouldn't want your aunt to do that now would you. She's not the only one with a complaint to file". Lucas said, smirk never leaving his face.
What the hell? It's official. Lucas Donnovan is the devil.
"No auntie.. Let's just leave it".
"Leave it?! My aunt was stupefied. "You have been complaining nonstop about the parties and now you just want to leave it?!"
"Common Mary this is absurd". Mr Donnovan chipped in. "Why are you the only one filing a complaint?"
"Because they are all spineless that's what".
Mr Donnovan turned to his son. "Lucas here promises to keep the party down, right Lucas".
"Of course Reese". Lucas said smiling.
Mr Donnovan was a disciplinarian alright. (Note the sarcasm).
"This is your last warning Donnovans" My aunt said pulling me away. "Next time i'll have your heads!"
"Common Mary isn't that too harsh!" Mr Donnovan called, amusement clear in his voice. He obviously wasn't taking her seriously.
"To hell with you! Bunch of clowns!"
