Chapter 7

The wedding day arrived far too quickly. Amara barely slept. When she finally closed her eyes, it felt as though only minutes had passed before someone was knocking on her door. “Miss—” The maid stopped herself. Then corrected quickly. “Miss Selene.” The name still felt wrong. Amara opened her eyes slowly. For a moment, she forgot where she was. Forgot what day it was. Then reality returned. Sharp. Merciless. Today. The wedding was today. A knot tightened in her stomach. Outside her window, the morning sky was clear. Bright. Beautiful. As though the world had decided to ignore the disaster unfolding inside her life. The door opened and several maids entered carrying garment boxes. No one smiled. No one offered congratulations. Even they seemed aware that this was not a normal wedding. One by one, the boxes were placed carefully around the room. The wedding dress had arrived from the Vale family the night before. It now hung near the wardrobe. Elegant. Expensive. And terrifying. Amara stared at it. Unable to look away. Mrs. Blackwood arrived shortly afterward. The moment she entered the room, her eyes found Amara. For several seconds neither spoke. Because there was nothing left to say. Everything that could be said had already been said. Everything that could be changed had already been lost. Finally, Evelyn stepped forward. “You should get ready.” Her voice was gentle. Too gentle. Amara nodded. Slowly. Silently. And the preparations began. Hours later— the Blackwood estate stood unusually quiet. The wedding convoy was waiting outside. The cars gleamed beneath the afternoon sun. Servants moved carefully. Nobody spoke louder than necessary. Nobody wanted to be the one to disturb the fragile calm holding everything together. Upstairs, Amara stood before the mirror. Fully dressed. The white gown fit perfectly. That somehow made it worse. Because for the first time— she looked exactly like the bride everyone expected to see. Selene Blackwood. Not Amara. Selene. A soft knock came at the door. Mr. Callen entered. For a moment, even he seemed surprised. Then he lowered his head respectfully. “The cars are ready.” The room fell silent. Amara stared at her reflection one last time. Then slowly looked away. Because if she kept staring— she might lose the courage to move. And courage was the only thing she had left. A few minutes later, she stepped out of the Blackwood estate. Not as Amara Blackwood. But as the bride the Vale family was waiting for. And with every step toward the waiting car— the lie became more real. The car pulled away from the Blackwood estate without ceremony. Amara never looked back. She couldn't. She was afraid that if she saw the house one last time, she would ask the driver to turn around. The journey passed in near silence. Mrs. Blackwood sat beside her, her gloved hands clasped tightly in her lap. Mr. Blackwood occupied the seat opposite them. Mr. Callen rode in the front with the driver. No one attempted conversation. Every mile carried them farther from the truth. Outside the window, the familiar streets gradually disappeared. The town gave way to wider roads lined with ancient trees. Soon, tall wrought-iron gates came into view. Elegant. Imposing. A polished silver crest was fixed at the center. The Vale family emblem. The gates opened before the cars even slowed. As though they had been expecting this exact moment. Amara felt her heartbeat quicken. The convoy rolled forward. She looked out the window. The estate seemed endless. Perfectly trimmed gardens stretched across both sides of the long driveway. Stone fountains sparkled beneath the afternoon sun. Rows of white flowers lined the path leading toward the main mansion. Luxury wasn't merely displayed here. It was expected. The mansion itself stood proudly at the end of the drive. Grand. Timeless. Its towering columns and sweeping balconies overlooked the entire estate. Everything about it spoke of wealth. Power. Authority. The cars came to a smooth stop. For a brief moment, nobody moved. Then Mr. Callen opened the rear door. He looked at Amara. "We're here." The words settled heavily inside her. Mrs. Blackwood reached for her hand. Her fingers were cold. "So are mine," she admitted with a weak smile when she noticed Amara's trembling. Amara managed the faintest nod. Then she stepped out. The air felt different. Cooler. Sharper. Waiting. Several members of the Vale household were already standing near the entrance. Perfectly dressed. Perfectly still. The head butler stepped forward first. He bowed respectfully. "Welcome, Miss Selene." The name struck Amara like a stone. She almost looked behind her. Almost. Instead, she remembered Mr. Callen's countless corrections. Pause before answering. She offered a small, composed smile. "Thank you." The butler inclined his head with approval. "Please follow me." As they walked toward the mansion, Amara became painfully aware of the eyes on her. Servants. House staff. Guests arriving in elegant cars. Everyone looked at her with quiet curiosity. To them, she was Selene Blackwood. The bride. No one questioned it. No one doubted it. And somehow, that frightened her even more. Inside, the mansion was alive with quiet activity. Fresh flowers filled every corner. Soft music drifted through the grand hall. Staff moved swiftly but without disorder, each person seeming to know exactly where they belonged. Amara, however, felt completely out of place. The head butler stopped before a wide staircase. "A bridal suite has been prepared for you upstairs." He turned politely toward Mrs. Blackwood. "You may accompany your daughter until the ceremony." Mrs. Blackwood nodded gratefully. As they climbed the staircase together, Amara glanced around one last time. "So many people..." she whispered. Mrs. Blackwood squeezed her hand gently. "They're all looking at the bride." Amara lowered her eyes. "If only they knew." Neither of them noticed the figure standing silently on the second-floor balcony. Watching. Observing. Without a word. His expression gave nothing away. He remained there only a moment before turning and disappearing down the opposite corridor. Unseen. Unknown. The bridal suite door closed softly behind Amara. But somewhere else inside the Vale estate— someone had already seen the bride arrive. The bridal suite was almost as large as the Blackwood family's drawing room. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, illuminating every corner of the elegantly furnished space. Several women were already waiting inside. The moment Amara entered, they bowed respectfully. "Good afternoon, Miss Selene." Again. That name. It came so naturally from strangers that, for a terrifying moment, Amara wondered if she would eventually start believing it herself. One of the women stepped forward. "I'm Helena, the wedding coordinator." She offered a warm, practiced smile. "We've been waiting for you." Amara returned a small nod. Helena clapped her hands softly. "Let's make a few final adjustments before the ceremony." The veil was straightened. The folds of the gown were smoothed once more. A single strand of hair was carefully tucked back into place. Every tiny detail was inspected. Corrected. Perfected. Mrs. Blackwood stood quietly nearby, watching everything. Neither she nor Amara spoke much. Words felt unnecessary now. Outside, the sound of arriving guests drifted through the open windows. More cars. More voices. More people gathering to witness a marriage built on a lie. Helena checked the time. "We still have twenty minutes." She smiled reassuringly. "Everything is running perfectly." Amara almost laughed. Perfectly. If only she knew. On the opposite side of the estate— another room remained remarkably quiet. A tailor adjusted the sleeve of Ethan Vale's black suit. "It's finished, sir." Ethan glanced once at his reflection. Satisfied. Without vanity. Without excitement. Marriage had never been something he anticipated with joy. This one, especially. It was simply another responsibility. Another obligation attached to the Vale name. His cufflinks were fastened. His jacket straightened. The tailor stepped back. "You look ready." Ethan picked up his watch from the table. "What time?" "The ceremony begins in fifteen minutes, sir." He nodded once. No nerves. No anticipation. Only calm. As he left the room, several members of the household greeted him respectfully. "Good afternoon, Master Ethan." He acknowledged them with a brief nod before continuing toward the ceremony hall. Outside, guests had already begun taking their seats. Conversations flowed quietly beneath the elegant floral arrangements. Everything had been prepared with precision worthy of the Vale family. Back inside the bridal suite, Helena smiled gently. "It's time." The words stole the remaining air from Amara's lungs. Mrs. Blackwood reached for both of her hands. Her own were trembling. "You can still do this." Amara looked at her mother. Then slowly nodded. Not because she believed it. Because there was no longer another choice. The doors opened. Music began to play. And every eye in the Vale estate turned toward the bride. The wedding music rose softly through the grand hall as the doors opened. Every conversation faded. Every eye turned toward the bride. Amara drew a slow breath before slipping her hand through her father's arm. Together, they walked down the flower-lined aisle beneath the watchful eyes of family, guests, and strangers who believed they were witnessing the beginning of a perfect marriage. Halfway down the aisle, Amara finally looked up. Ethan Vale stood waiting. Tall. Composed. Unreadable. He matched every rumor she had ever heard about him. Powerful. Reserved. Untouchable. As they reached the altar, Richard quietly placed Amara's hand into Ethan's before stepping aside. The ceremony began. The officiant's words echoed through the hall, but Amara barely heard them. She answered when expected. Accepted the ring with trembling fingers. Repeated the vows almost mechanically. Everything felt unreal, as though someone else was living the moment for her. Then came the final declaration. "I now pronounce you husband and wife." Applause filled the hall. Warm smiles spread among the guests. To everyone present, it was the union of two powerful families. Only Amara knew the truth. She had entered the Vale estate pretending to be Selene Blackwood. She left the altar as Ethan Vale's wife. And with that single step beside him, there was no turning back.
