The Man Behind The Calm

669 Words
The moment I stepped out of the dining hall, the silence followed me. But unlike her I welcomed it. Silence was easier. Predictable. Controlled. I walked down the long corridor, my footsteps steady against the polished floor, until I reached the study. The door closed behind me with a soft click. Only then… I exhaled. Not out of exhaustion But restraint. “She’s starting to question it.” The voice came from the corner. Old Madam Mu stepped forward slowly, her expression no longer gentle—only sharp and calculating. “She’s smarter than they thought.” I walked past her, loosening my cuff slightly. “They underestimated her,” I replied calmly. “They always do.” Madam Mu watched me carefully. “And you?” she asked. “Did you?” For a brief moment Silence. Then a faint smile appeared on my lips. “No.” I moved toward the desk, opening a drawer with practiced ease. Inside… A file. Old. Sealed. Untouched by anyone but me. For years. Madam Mu’s gaze darkened slightly. “You’re going to show her?” “Not yet.” I pulled the file out but didn’t open it. Not yet. Not when the timing wasn’t perfect. “She’s not ready,” I said. “Or you’re not ready?” Madam Mu countered. My hand paused. Just slightly. Then continued as if nothing had happened. “She needs to choose it herself,” I said finally. “Not be forced into it.” Madam Mu let out a quiet sigh. “You sound like him.” That Made me stop. The air shifted. Colder. Heavier. “Don’t compare me to him,” I said, my voice low. She didn’t back down. “You’re walking the same path.” I turned, my gaze sharp. “No,” I replied. “I’m finishing what he started.” Silence settled between us again. But this time It wasn’t calm. It was filled with things neither of us said. After a moment, Madam Mu spoke again. “The Xiao family is already collapsing,” she said. “News will spread by tonight.” I nodded slightly. “As expected.” “And the girl?” I knew who she meant. Xiao Jiao. A faint, almost amused expression crossed my face. “She’s already run.” Madam Mu frowned. “Should we bring her back?” “No.” My answer was immediate. Cold. “She’s more useful where she is.” I finally looked down at the file in my hand. My thumb brushed lightly over the edge. A name was written inside. One that had been buried. Erased. Hidden from the world. From her. “For now,” I murmured, almost to myself, “she still believes she’s lost.” Madam Mu watched me closely. “And when she finds out the truth?” A slow smile formed on my lips. Not warm. Not kind. But certain. “Then,” I said quietly, “she’ll have no choice but to stand where she belongs.” “By your side?” Madam Mu asked. I didn’t answer immediately. Because the truth was This was never about standing beside me. It was about where she was meant to stand from the very beginning. Higher than the Xiao family. Higher than anyone who tried to bury her existence. “She thinks I chose her,” I said. My gaze darkened slightly. “But she doesn’t know…” I closed the file. “…she was chosen long before I ever met her.” Madam Mu’s expression grew serious. “Then everything is already in motion.” I nodded once. “Yes.” Outside, the clouds began to clear. The storm had passed. But what was coming next Was far worse. Across the mansion, she stood by the window, staring at a world that had just rejected her. Unaware… That she wasn’t abandoned. She was hidden. Protected. Prepared. And soon Very soon The truth would no longer stay buried.
