Julian spun away from me. The dangerous yellow light in his eyes burned bright like a hot fire. His hands curled into tight fists. I could hear the terrifying sound of his bones cracking and shifting. He was preparing to change into his wolf form right in front of me. I stumbled backward. My heart hammered against my ribs.
Another deafening crash sounded from the lower level of the grand mansion. The heavy glass windows in our room rattled hard. Shouts and angry snarls replaced the quiet peace of the night. The rogues were inside the gates.
"Lock the door," Julian ordered. His voice was no longer entirely human. It sounded like a deep growl vibrating from the bottom of his chest. He did not look at me. His full attention was fixed on the hallway outside. "Do not open it for anyone but me. Do you understand?"
"Julian," I whispered. My voice was shaking with deep fear.
He finally turned his head. The sharp angles of his face were already transforming. His teeth elongated into deadly fangs. "Keep my son safe, Clara. I will kill every single rogue that dares to step foot on my territory. I will return for you."
Before I could say another word, Julian threw the heavy wooden doors open and ran into the hallway. I heard the sickening sound of flesh tearing and a loud yelp of pain. Julian had already engaged an enemy.
I rushed forward and slammed the double doors shut. My trembling hands fumbled with the thick metal locks. I slid the heavy bolts into place. I secured the room as best as I could. The heavy thud of bodies hitting the walls outside made me jump back. I pressed my hands over my mouth to quiet my rapid breathing.
"Mommy?"
I turned around quickly. Lucas sat up in the center of the large velvet bed. He rubbed his sleepy blue eyes. The loud noises had woken him up. He looked around the strange room. His small face twisted in confusion and fear.
"It is okay, sweetheart," I said. I ran over to the bed. I climbed onto the mattress and pulled him tightly against my chest. "Everything is going to be alright."
"Loud noises," Lucas mumbled. He buried his face into my neck. He trembled slightly in my arms.
"It is just bad weather outside," I lied softly. I stroked his dark hair. I prayed he would believe me. I prayed he would not notice the terrifying snarls echoing through the thick walls.
The fighting outside grew louder and more vicious. I could hear the heavy thud of paws running across the marble floors downstairs. The sharp cries of injured wolves echoed through the air. The Shadow Creek Pack was fighting for their lives. We were trapped right in the middle of the chaos.
I held Lucas closer. My mind raced with terrible thoughts. Julian had said the rogues were tracking us. They wanted my son because he was the Alpha heir. If they breached this room, they would take him away from me forever. I would not let that happen. I looked around the large bedroom. I searched for a safe place to hide. The heavy oak wardrobe in the corner caught my eye. It was tall and wide enough to conceal a small child.
"Lucas, listen to me very carefully," I whispered. I pulled back slightly to look into his bright blue eyes. "We are going to play a hiding game. I need you to climb inside that big wooden closet and stay very quiet. You cannot make a single sound until I tell you the game is over."
Lucas looked at the dark wardrobe and then back at me. His bottom lip quivered. "Are the bad men here?"
My heart broke at his innocent question. His dormant wolf senses were too sharp to be fooled by my lies about the weather. He knew something dangerous was happening.
"Yes, sweetheart," I admitted softly. "Some bad people are trying to hurt us. But Julian is outside protecting us. And I need you to be very brave and hide so they cannot find you."
Lucas nodded slowly. His small face hardened with surprising determination. He crawled off the bed and walked over to the tall wardrobe. I opened the heavy wooden doors. The inside was spacious and smelled strongly of cedarwood. I pushed aside the expensive suits and dresses to make a clear space for him on the bottom shelf.
"Get in," I instructed gently.
Lucas climbed inside. He sat cross legged on the wooden floor. He hugged his knees tightly to his chest. I grabbed his small stuffed bear from the bed and handed it to him. He took it with a shaky hand.
"I will be right here," I promised. I pressed a soft kiss to his forehead. "I love you so much, Lucas."
"I love you too, Mommy," he whispered back.
I closed the heavy doors of the wardrobe. It plunged him into total darkness. I prayed to the heavens that he would remain completely quiet. Now I had to find a way to protect myself. I looked around the luxurious room for any type of weapon. My eyes landed on the heavy metal fire poker resting near the stone fireplace. I ran over and grabbed it. The iron felt cold and solid in my sweating hands. It was not much against a fully grown werewolf, but it was better than fighting with my bare hands.
I stood in the center of the room. I clutched the fire poker tightly. The minutes dragged on like hours. The sounds of battle continued to rage downstairs. I heard the shattering of glass and the splintering of wood. The rogues were tearing the beautiful estate apart. I closed my eyes and prayed for Julian to return. I prayed for his safety. Despite everything he had done, despite the fear he instilled in me, I realized I did not want him to die. He was the father of my child. Deep down in the darkest corner of my heart, I still cared for him.
Suddenly, the heavy fighting in the hallway right outside my door stopped. An eerie silence fell over the corridor. My breath caught in my throat. I gripped the iron poker tighter. I raised it defensively in front of my chest. Someone was standing right outside the bedroom doors. I could hear the harsh, ragged breathing of a large beast.
A heavy fist pounded violently against the thick wood. I jumped back, my heart pounding rapidly.
"Open the door, human," a rough, unfamiliar voice snarled from the other side. "We know you have the boy in there. Hand him over, and we might let you live."
Panic seized my chest. "Go away," I screamed. I tried to sound much braver than I actually felt. "The Alpha will kill you."
The rogue let out a cruel, barking laugh. "The Alpha is busy bleeding out downstairs. Now open this door before I tear it down myself."
My blood ran entirely cold. Julian was bleeding out? No, he was the strongest Alpha in the region. He could not be defeated so easily. The rogue was just lying to scare me. But the seed of doubt took root in my mind, filling me with terrible dread.
