Chapter 3

LYANNA’S Standing there and watching Lucian make love to Zarina, it reached a point where the pain and sorrow turned into anger. I felt like my heart was burning. The pain, the betrayal, it became unbearable. "I curse the day I met you, Lucian, I curse the day I fell in love with you, I curse the day we shared our first kiss, I curse you," I said underneath my breath, my heart throbbing in pain of both the rejection and the betrayal. “I will never forgive you, Lucian. I swear, I will get past this pain, I will rise from this pain, and you'll regret everything you've done tonight,” I cursed under my breath as a single tear ran down my cheek. I wiped away the tear with my thumb, signifying a promise to never let myself be weak again. It was a vow to end the cycle of tears despite the pain I still felt. As I held onto my family heirloom, ready to put it around my neck and leave, a voice shouted in the corridor, and I froze. “Here she is!” the voice exclaimed, and when I looked to my left, I saw an omega pointing at me. Moments later, several guards rushed in. “She escaped from the dungeon!” another guard shouted. I was too shocked to know what to do next. My plan was to retrieve my heirloom and depart, but I got distracted upon discovering Lucian with Zarina. Before I knew it, Lucian emerged from his chamber, now dressed, and his eyes widened upon seeing me standing at his door after he had ordered my imprisonment. “How did you get out?” he asked in rage. Before he could say another word, I started running, making a quick getaway. “Chase her, run her over!” Lucian ordered, his voice final. I could hear the omegas shifting into their wolf forms to pursue me more swiftly. My heart raced as I approached the gate, its echo loud in my ears, my steps faltering under my weight. “Kill her this time, don’t bother bringing her back to the dungeon!” Lucian's voice trailed behind as he followed, confident in the other wolves' abilities to catch me due to my injury. Despite my efforts, I couldn't shift into my wolf form to run faster. “My injury won’t let me shift,” I murmured, realizing the reason for my inability to transform. “Lyanna, you are too weak. I can’t come out. Forcing me to come out might kill you; it may damage your organs permanently,” Reyna, my wolf, cautioned inside my head as she saw my persistent attempts to shift into my wolf form. “You have to stop trying, Lyanna,” Reyna insisted. Looking back, I saw the wolves closing in on me, with Alpha Lucian following at a leisurely pace. “There is no choice, Reyna. They will catch up to us; we are going to die if they do. Don’t you get it?” I said angrily, determined to find a way out by also shifting. As I thought of turning left, the only potential escape route, a low growl, more menacing than an omega's, echoed behind me, halting me at the cliff. It was a beta. Her blue eyes glowed as she stepped into the moonlight. It was Zarina again, the woman bent on witnessing my demise that night. “Reyna, we’ve been surrounded. We are in the midst of hungry wolves,” I murmured, assessing my injuries as the wound reopened due to the strain of running. The wolves that were chasing me stopped in front, growling hungrily with their yellow eyes, knowing I had nowhere to run. Knowing I had no escape, and the only way was to submit to their claws and teeth, they were ready to devour me on the Alpha’s command. “You think you can commit a crime and escape?” Lucian said as he walked out from behind the omegas. They cleared a path for him to walk through, so he could have access to me. “You’ve always been a weak, pathetic, and useless wolf. I wonder how you still remained so weak even after awakening your wolf,” he said, his eyes glowing red in anger. I turned to Zarina and then saw the twisted smile that formed on her face. It gave her pleasure to see Lucian belittle and insult me. “An alpha like me should never have settled for a weak wolf like you, but I guess you were good at your game and managed to lure me into falling for you, but today, I regret it!” Lucian said through his clenched teeth. The wolves were growling, hungry to devour my flesh, but just before they moved forward, Lucian held his hand in the air, as if he wasn’t done talking to me yet. “I regret so much for letting Zarina go because of a worthless wolf like you. She has always been the strongest wolf I know, and you helped me realize tonight that I made a mistake leaving her,” Lucian said. I closed my eyes as tears threatened to wash down my face once more. I remembered my promise to not cry over the pain anymore, but the pain was becoming unbearable. His words bruised my heart, and I couldn’t help but feel the scar. “You are worthless, and above all, you don’t deserve to live. I just want to thank you for helping me reignite my love for Zarina,” he said, and his words pierced my heart like a dagger. Just then, he ordered the hungry wolves... “Tear her up into pieces, and leave her to the vultures!” Lucian said. Growl! The wolves wasted no time charging after me, and in fear of what would happen, I chose a more painless death, letting myself fall off the cliff into the mighty river below. My heartbeat dwindled as my weakened body tore through the air. . .
