Chapter Eleven: The Ghost's Prison

The Moretti Estate was quiet. Dante stood in his office, staring at the old photograph they had found at the docks. Valentina walked in with her laptop. "I found something." Dante looked up. "Tell me." "The picture wasn't the only clue." She placed the laptop on his desk. "I enhanced the background." Dante leaned closer. "What am I looking at?" "Look at the building behind your father." He studied the image. "It looks like an old factory." "It does." She pressed a key. "But it isn't." A map appeared on the screen. "The building is in the abandoned industrial district." Dante frowned. "Bellini's territory." Valentina nodded. "It matches the location of the headquarters we've been trying to find." Dante picked up his jacket. "Then we're done waiting." An hour later, Dante's SUV stopped outside an abandoned steel factory. Broken windows covered the front of the building, and rust covered the old metal gates. The place looked empty. Valentina looked through a pair of binoculars. "No guards." Dante smiled slightly. "That's what worries me." She looked at him. "You think they want us to come?" "They've been leading us from the beginning." "Then why walk into another trap?" "Because it's the only path we have." Valentina nodded. "Fair enough." They climbed over a broken fence and quietly entered the factory. The air smelled of dust and oil. Old machines stood where workers had once built steel. Everything was silent. Too silent. Valentina whispered, "Do you hear that?" Dante stopped. A faint humming sound echoed through the building. "Electricity." She looked surprised. "This place still has power." "Someone is using it." They followed the sound until they reached a large storage room. The floor looked different. Dante knelt beside a metal plate. "Help me." Together they pulled it open. A staircase appeared beneath it. Valentina looked into the darkness. "So this is how they hide it." Dante switched on his flashlight. "Stay behind me." The stairs led deep underground. The air became colder with every step. After several minutes, they reached a heavy steel door. Dante tried the handle. Locked. Valentina removed a small device from her backpack. "Give me thirty seconds." "You can't open it?" She smiled. "You still don't know everything about me." She connected the device to the electronic lock. Lights flashed. A soft click echoed through the hallway. "The door is open." Dante looked at her. "I'm impressed." "You should be." They stepped inside. The room was filled with computer screens. Most were switched off. Others showed security cameras from different parts of Raveno City. Valentina stared at the monitors. "They've been watching the whole city." Dante walked to a large table. Maps. Financial records. Shipping routes. Pictures of politicians, judges, police officers. Every file carried Bellini's mark. "This isn't just a criminal operation," Dante said. "It's a government inside the government." Valentina looked toward another door. "There are more rooms." They searched one office after another. Most had been emptied. Someone had left in a hurry. Then Dante stopped. "Listen." A weak voice echoed through the hallway. "Help..." Valentina froze. "Did you hear that?" Dante nodded. "It came from downstairs." They followed the sound to another staircase. This one led even deeper underground. Soon they reached a long hallway lined with prison cells. Some were empty. Others had dried blood on the walls. Chains hung from the ceiling. Valentina looked away. "This place is horrible." Dante walked slowly down the corridor. "Someone spent years hiding people here." Another weak voice spoke. "Who's there?" They hurried toward the last cell. An old man sat on the floor. His beard was long, his clothes were torn, and his face was covered with bruises. He looked at Dante for a long moment. Then he smiled weakly. "I wondered if you would ever come." Dante stepped closer. "You know me?" "I knew your father." Valentina unlocked the cell. The old man tried to stand but almost fell. Dante caught him. "Easy." The old man looked into Dante's eyes. "You have his face." "Who are you?" "My name is Enzo Ricci." Dante frowned. "The accountant?" Enzo nodded. "I handled the money for the four founders." Valentina looked confused. "The four founders?" Enzo sighed. "Your father. Marco Bellini. And two others." Dante's heart began to race. "The same four men in the photograph." "Yes." "You know who the fourth man is?" Enzo looked around nervously. "I do." "Tell me." Enzo lowered his voice. "If I say his name... he'll kill us all." Dante knelt in front of him. "You're safe now." Enzo laughed sadly. "No one is safe." Valentina stepped closer. "We can protect you." Enzo slowly shook his head. "You don't understand. He has people everywhere. The police. The courts. The government. He even has men inside your own organization." Dante's face hardened. "What are you saying?" Enzo looked straight at him. "Someone you trust has been reporting your every move." Before Dante could answer, every light in the prison suddenly went out. Darkness filled the hallway. A loud alarm began to ring. Red emergency lights flashed overhead. Valentina reached for her pistol. "What just happened?" Dante listened carefully. Footsteps. Dozens of them. Coming from above. Enzo's face turned pale. "They're here." Dante raised his weapon. "Bellini's men?" Enzo slowly shook his head, his voice trembling. "No. They're much worse." Heavy gunfire exploded somewhere above them. The walls shook with the force of several explosions. Dust fell from the ceiling. Valentina looked at Dante. "We're not alone." Then a terrified scream echoed through the underground prison. It was followed by complete silence. The scream echoed through the underground prison. Then everything became silent. Dante raised his pistol. "Stay behind me." Valentina looked at Enzo. "Can you walk?" "I'll try." Another explosion shook the building. Dust fell from the ceiling. Gunfire echoed from above. Valentina frowned. "Those aren't Bellini's men."Enzo nodded. "I told you. They've come to erase every secret." Dante looked at him. "Who are they?" Enzo took a deep breath. "The Ghost's soldiers." Dante's eyes narrowed. "So the Ghost is real." "I prayed you would never find out." More footsteps rushed down the stairs. Voices shouted through the hallway. "Search every cell! Leave no witnesses alive!" Dante looked at Valentina. "We have to move." She nodded. "This way." The three hurried down the corridor. At the end of the prison was a heavy steel door. Dante pushed it. It didn't move. "It's locked." Valentina took out her electronic lock device. "Cover me." Dante stood beside the door with his pistol ready. The voices grew louder. "They're getting closer," he said. "I know." "Hurry." "I'm trying." A bullet struck the wall beside them. "They're here!" Valentina shouted. Several masked men appeared at the end of the hallway. Without a word, they opened fire. Dante fired back. One attacker fell. Another hid behind the prison bars. Valentina kept working on the lock. "Almost there!" Enzo suddenly grabbed Dante's arm. "They don't want me alive." "They're not getting you." "You don't understand. I know something Bellini doesn't." Dante looked at him. "What?" Enzo whispered, "The Ghost never trusted Bellini." Before Dante could ask another question, the lock clicked open. "It's open!" Valentina shouted. They rushed through the door. It led into a narrow service tunnel. The steel door slammed shut behind them. For a few seconds, everything was quiet. Then heavy pounding came from the other side. "They're trying to break through," Valentina said. "They'll need time," Dante replied. "Let's keep moving." The tunnel stretched deep beneath the city. Old pipes ran along the walls. Water dripped from the ceiling. Enzo walked slowly, his breathing growing heavier. Valentina supported him. "You need a hospital." He smiled weakly. "I've needed one for years." Dante looked back. "No more talking about dying." Enzo chuckled. "You sound just like your father." Dante stopped walking. "My father trusted you." "He did." "Did you betray him?" Enzo looked hurt. "Never." "Then who did?" Enzo closed his eyes. "It started ten years ago." Ten Years Earlier The four founders sat around a large wooden table: Don Alessandro Moretti, Marco Bellini, Judge Lorenzo Ricci, and another man whose face remained hidden in the shadows. The hidden man spoke first. "Our business is growing." Marco nodded. "But Alessandro wants out." Everyone looked at Don Alessandro. He stood. "I agreed to build an empire. I didn't agree to destroy innocent families." The hidden man smiled. "You've become weak." Alessandro shook his head. "No. I've become a father." The room fell silent. Marco looked down without saying a word. Then the hidden man laughed. "If one man leaves, he becomes a problem. Enzo opened his eyes. "That was the first night your father signed his own death warrant." Dante's hands tightened into fists. "The fourth founder ordered the murders?" Enzo nodded. "But Marco" "What about Marco?" "He didn't stop him." Valentina looked at Dante. "So Bellini wasn't the mastermind." "No. He was only protecting the real one." Suddenly, the tunnel shook violently. Another explosion. The lights went out. The tunnel filled with smoke. "They found us!" Valentina shouted. The steel door behind them burst open. Masked soldiers rushed inside. "Go!" Dante yelled. The three ran through the smoke. Bullets hit the tunnel walls. Pieces of concrete fell around them. Ahead, Dante saw a ladder leading upward. "There!" Valentina helped Enzo climb first. Dante stayed below, firing at the attackers. "Hurry!" Enzo reached the top. Valentina climbed next. She looked down. "Dante!" "I'm coming." Just as Dante grabbed the ladder, a masked gunman appeared behind him and aimed his rifle. Before he could fire, Enzo picked up a metal pipe and threw it down. It struck the attacker across the face. The rifle fired wildly into the ceiling. "Dante!" Enzo shouted. "Now!" Dante climbed the ladder. As soon as he reached the top, Valentina slammed the metal hatch shut. The attackers pounded against it from below. "It won't hold forever," Dante said. He looked around. They were inside another abandoned warehouse. Morning sunlight shone through broken windows. Enzo suddenly collapsed. Valentina knelt beside him. "Enzo!" Blood spread across his shirt. She looked up at Dante. "He was shot." Enzo smiled weakly. "I knew this would happen." "No," Dante said. "We're getting you to a doctor." Enzo slowly shook his head. "My time is over." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small brass key. He placed it in Dante's hand. "What is this?" "A safety deposit box." "Where?" "Raveno National Bank. Box number seventy-seven." "What is inside?" Enzo looked into Dante's eyes. "The truth." Dante leaned closer. "Tell me the Ghost's name." Enzo tried to speak. Suddenly. A single gunshot echoed through the warehouse. Enzo's eyes widened. A small red stain appeared on his forehead. He fell backward. Dead. Valentina gasped. "Dante!" A red laser sight moved across the floor. "Sniper!" Dante shouted. He grabbed Valentina and pulled her behind a concrete wall. Another bullet shattered the window. Dante looked toward the rooftop across the street. A lone figure stood there with a sniper rifle. The figure lowered the weapon, gave a slow salute... and disappeared. Silence filled the warehouse. Valentina looked at Enzo's lifeless body. "He was our only witness." Dante stared at the brass key in his hand. "No. He left us one last clue." He closed his hand around the key. "Whatever is inside that safety deposit box, it was worth killing him for." Far away, inside Bellini's headquarters, Marco watched the sniper walk into the room. "Is it done?" Marco asked. The sniper removed the mask. "It is." Marco nodded. "And Dante?" "He's heading for the bank." Marco smiled. "Good. Everything is happening exactly as the Ghost predicted." The sniper frowned. "Should we stop him?" Marco looked toward the city skyline. "No. Let him open the box. I want him to see the truth for himself.
