Rain fell heavily over the Moretti Estate as Dante stood quietly in the memorial garden. Water ran down the marble statue of his father, Don Alessandro Moretti.
The statue looked strong and proud, just as his father had been. Dante stared at it without moving.
Ten years had passed, but he still remembered the night everything changed. "I will find the people who destroyed our family," he whispered.
Soft footsteps came from behind him. "You've been standing here for almost an hour." Valentina walked toward him, holding two cups of hot coffee.
She handed one to him with a gentle smile. "You should get some rest."
Dante accepted the cup but kept his eyes on the statue.
"Rest is a luxury I can't afford."
Valentina sighed. "So is living only for revenge.
He finally looked at her. "You think this is only about revenge?" "I think revenge has become the only thing keeping you alive."
For a moment, neither of them spoke. The sound of the rain filled the silence.
Then Dante reached into his coat pocket. "I received another message." Valentina frowned. "From the anonymous sender?"
He nodded. "This time, there were no words." He unfolded a piece of paper and handed it to her. It was an old map with one strange symbol drawn in the middle. A black raven.
Valentina's face changed. "I've seen this symbol before." Dante looked at her with surprise. "Where?"
"My father kept old investigation files hidden in our house. I found this symbol in one of them."
"You never told me." "I didn't think it meant anything."
She looked at the map again. "But now I know it does."
A few minutes later, they entered Dante's private office. The room was filled with large computer screens, city maps, and security monitors. One wall was covered with photographs connected by red strings.
At the center was a large picture of Marco Bellini. Around it were pictures of politicians, judges, police officers, and business leaders.
Every picture represented another person connected to the conspiracy. Valentina placed an old metal box on the desk.
"My father hid this before he died."
She unlocked it carefully. Inside were newspaper cuttings, handwritten notes, and a worn leather notebook. She opened the notebook and slowly turned the pages.
Most of the pages contained names, dates, bank records, and coded messages. Then she stopped. On the last page was the same black raven.
Below it were the words: "When the raven rises beneath the city, no one above is safe." Dante read the sentence twice. "Beneath the city..."
Valentina nodded. "The Underground City."
Dante shook his head. "Look closely." He pointed at the map beside the writing. "These are not streets." Valentina leaned closer. "They're tunnels." "The old smuggling tunnels." She looked at him.
"I thought they were closed years ago." "So did everyone else."
Dante folded the notebook shut. "Someone has been using them in secret."
Across the city, Marco Bellini sat inside his hidden headquarters. Large television screens covered the walls. One screen showed the Moretti Estate.
Another showed Dante's office. A third followed Valentina as she entered the mansion.
Marco smiled calmly. His trusted lieutenant stepped forward. "They're getting closer." "I know." "Should we stop them now?" Marco slowly shook his head. "No." "They're becoming dangerous."
"They still don't understand what they're looking for."
The lieutenant looked confused. "They think the Underground City is the final destination." "It isn't?"
Marco smiled again. "No." "It's only the beginning."
Near midnight, Dante's armored SUV stopped outside an abandoned subway station. The entrance was dark and covered with rust.
Broken glass lay across the ground. Everything looked forgotten. Valentina switched on her flashlight.
"This place gives me a bad feeling." "It should," Dante replied.
He walked toward the railway tracks and crouched down. "There are footprints." Valentina moved beside him. "How many?" "At least six people."
She looked closer. "They're wearing military boots." "And they're carrying heavy equipment."
A loud metal sound echoed through the tunnel. Both of them quickly pulled out their pistols. They listened carefully.
Nothing. Only silence. Then they heard it. A child's laughter. Valentina turned quickly.
"Did you hear that?" Dante nodded.
"There shouldn't be any children here." The laughter suddenly stopped.
A quiet voice came from the darkness. "You're late." Gunfire exploded through the tunnel. Bullets smashed into the concrete walls.
Dante grabbed Valentina and pulled her behind a broken pillar. "Stay down!" More bullets flew past them.
Bright flashes filled the darkness. "They knew we were coming," Valentina whispered. "They've been waiting for us."
Dante fired two quick shots. One attacker fell to the ground. The others disappeared deeper into the tunnels. "They're running away," Valentina said.
Dante kept his gun raised. "No." He watched the dark tunnel ahead. "They're leading us somewhere." The two of them exchanged a quick look before moving forward.
Neither of them realized they had just taken the first step into a secret that had remained hidden for ten long years.
