Chapter 22Christmas Eve Day dawned sunny but chilly, with no promise of a white Christmas. They both dressed casually for the day, fed the animals and cleaned the litter pan, and sat down for a leisurely breakfast of coffee, cinnamon toast, and maple bacon—“I want that recipe, Patrick.” “Sure, Kyle.” With breakfast finished and the dirty dishes rinsed and put in the dishwasher, they took Def for a final walk before Pat had to leave. The drive to Logan was quiet, other than the Christmas music that filled the interior of Kyle’s rental. From the corner of his eye, he could see Pat stealing glances at him, and he wondered if something was disturbing the young man.
