"Sit here," I instruct her. She places her hands on the marble surface behind her and tries to jump up, but she struggles to find her balance. I chuckle at her effort, earning a fierce glare that only makes me laugh harder. "It's too high; I can't get up," she protests. I step in front of her, placing my hands on either side of her waist. With a gentle lift, I raise her from the floor and set her down on the countertop. She looks at me in surprise, but I deliberately avoid her gaze. I open a cupboard to my right and reach for the first-aid kit, setting it down beside her while still trying to keep my eyes away from hers. If she notices the flush on my cheeks, I’ll be mortified.
