CHAPTER 5: CRACKS IN THE EMPIRE

703 Words
Tenderness doesn’t survive long in houses built on blood. It just doesn't. News arrived on a Tuesday. A stranger with a grim face stood in the foyer, waiting for Dante. The Kovacs—a rival family—had figured out Mira was there. Even worse, they realized she actually mattered to him. She was a weakness now, a way to get to him. It was the first real crack in the armor Dante Moretti had spent a lifetime building. Within the hour, the gates were crowded with men. The estate felt less like a home and more like a fortress preparing for a siege. Dante’s mood shifted too. He was usually cold and controlled, which was scary enough, but now he was volatile. He snapped at servants for tiny mistakes he never would’ve noticed a week ago. He was acting out of a fear he wouldn't name. "You’re staying inside," he told her, pacing his study like a trapped animal. He was losing his cool, his usual composure just falling apart at the edges. "No arguments. I don't care what you have to do—it waits, or it doesn't happen." "You're scared," Mira said quietly. She watched the words hit him. He flinched, and it was obvious she’d hit on a truth he wasn't ready to deal with yet. "I don't get scared." He said it too fast. Too sharp. "You're scared of losing me. That's new, isn't it?" Mira kept her voice soft. She didn't want to attack him, just help him see it. "It's something you can't buy or threaten. It’s outside your money and your men and your reputation. I guess that’s terrifying for a man who thinks control is the only way to be safe." Dante stopped pacing. When he looked at her, the mask was gone. There was no cruelty or coldness left to hide behind. He was just a man looking at the one thing his empire couldn't protect. "If something happened to you," he said, his voice sounding rough and forced, "I don't know what I'd become." He explained how he’d built a life where nothing could touch him because there was nothing left to care about. Then she walked in. She hated him, and suddenly everything changed. Now he didn't know how to be that old version of himself without losing what mattered now. "That scares me more than the Kovacs," he added. He spoke so quietly it seemed like it hurt to say it out loud. Mira walked over and put her hands on his face. A few weeks ago, she wouldn't have dared; back then, his cruelty was the only thing she knew. But his skin was warm, and his jaw was tight with tension she wanted to fix. "Then don’t let it happen. Let me help you fight instead of locking me away like I’m made of glass." "Mira—" He started to protest, but she wouldn't let him. "You claimed me the night you showed up with that threat," she said, looking him straight in the eyes. "Let me claim something too. Let me stand with you instead of watching you fight a war to protect me. I didn't survive this long by hiding, Dante." He just looked at her for a long time. He looked like a king who'd been cornered by a softness he never asked for and couldn't live without. He searched her face to see if she meant it. Then he kissed her. It was fierce and messy—like a man trying to speak a language he never thought he’d learn and realizing he actually could. "Fine," he said against her mouth. His hands were gentle, even if his words were hard. "But you fight with me. Not instead of me. That's my only deal. I’ve buried too many people already." "It's enough," she whispered. She really meant it. Outside, the guards kept pacing the grounds. Their numbers grew every hour as the threat from the Kovacs spread like a fever. But inside the study, for a second, the two of them stood there. It wasn't about fear anymore. It felt like the start of an alliance neither of them had ever planned on.
