I knew it existed, but I didn’t really understand what it was for, or where it came from. I asked Michael, my Sherpa’s AI, for a brief history. It turns out that early this century euthanasia was uncommon. It was opposed on mostly religious and ethical grounds, but a group of people argued that staying alive with a terminal illness and unrelenting misery was cruel and withheld a basic human right. With the advances in medical technology since then, more people could live past one hundred years, and a lot of them didn’t want to keep going. The world they grew up in was gone forever. Many of their cities were unrecognizable and borders changed or meaningless. Ha
