The Master Bedroom

928 Words
I followed Damien up the wide spiral staircase, my heels clicking against the polished black marble like a countdown to disaster. Every step felt heavier. The mate bond — that treacherous, broken thing I thought had died three years ago — was waking up. It pulsed low in my stomach, warm and insistent, reacting to his scent, his voice, his presence. I hated it. The master bedroom took up half the entire second floor. Damien pushed open the double doors and stepped aside, letting me enter first. It was massive. A king-sized bed dominated the center, dressed in black silk sheets that looked sinful under the soft moonlight streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows. A modern fireplace crackled on one wall. On the other side, a walk-in closet stood open — half of it already filled with my clothes. He had moved everything while I was signing my life away. “You went through my things?” I snapped, spinning to face him. Damien shrugged off his black shirt, revealing a sculpted torso covered in dark tattoos — wolves, runes, and something that looked suspiciously like my name in ancient script across his left ribs. I quickly looked away. “Everything that belongs to you is now here,” he said simply. “Where it should have been all along.” I walked to the bed and grabbed a pillow. “I’ll take the couch.” “There is no couch in this room.” “Then I’ll sleep on the floor.” In two strides he was in front of me, towering, shirtless, radiating raw alpha energy. He plucked the pillow from my hands and tossed it back onto the bed. “You sleep in this bed, Elara. With me.” My pulse spiked. “I’m not having s*x with you.” A low, dangerous laugh escaped him. “Who said anything about s*x? Yet.” His eyes dragged slowly down my body, then back up. “Though I can smell how much your body wants it.” Heat flooded my cheeks. “You’re disgusting.” “And you’re lying to yourself.” He stepped even closer until I had to tilt my head back to meet his eyes. “Three years, Elara. Three years of wondering where you were. Three years of tracking every move you made in the human world while pretending I didn’t care.” My heart stuttered. “You… tracked me?” “Of course I did.” His voice dropped, almost hoarse. “You’re my mate. Even after I rejected you.” The words hit like a slap. “Then why?” I whispered, voice cracking despite myself. “Why did you humiliate me in front of everyone? Why did you throw me away like trash?” For the first time, something like regret flickered across his perfect face. He reached out and brushed a strand of hair behind my ear. His touch was surprisingly gentle. “Because I was a fool,” he admitted quietly. “The Alpha King wasn’t supposed to have a weak, low-ranking mate. My enemies would have used you against me. I thought rejecting you would protect you.” I laughed bitterly. “It didn’t feel like protection when they poured wine on me and laughed.” His jaw clenched. The gentle touch disappeared. His hand slid to the back of my neck, holding me in place. “I was wrong,” he growled. “And now I’m fixing it. You’re mine again. This time, no one will touch you. No one will hurt you. Not even me.” My breath shook. The bond was singing now, loud and demanding. I could feel his wolf reaching for mine through the fractured connection. I shoved at his chest. It was like pushing a mountain. “Let me go.” “Never again.” He lowered his head slowly, giving me time to pull away. I didn’t. His lips brushed mine — not the claiming kiss from earlier, but something deeper. Hungrier. My traitor hands gripped his biceps as heat pooled between my thighs. Just as his tongue touched my bottom lip, my phone rang on the bedside table. The sound shattered the moment. I pulled away, breathing hard, and grabbed it. The screen showed “Luna Mother” — the Alpha female of my old pack. Damien’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t answer.” I swiped to answer anyway. “Elara?” My mother’s voice was shaking. “The Crimson Fang attacked the eastern border tonight. Two warriors are dead. They’re demanding you as tribute or they’ll burn everything.” My blood ran cold. Damien took the phone from my hand and ended the call without a word. He tossed it onto the bed. “This is why you’re here,” he said, voice hard again. “Your pack is weak. I’m the only one who can protect them now.” “And the price is me?” I spat. He cupped my face with both hands, forcing me to look at him. His eyes were glowing with alpha power. “Yes. The price is you. In my bed. In my life. In my pack.” His thumb brushed my lower lip. “And deep down, you know you were always meant to be here.” I stared at him, chest heaving, body aching, heart torn between rage and something far more terrifying. The full moon outside seemed to pulse in time with the mate bond. And for the first time in three years, my wolf whispered inside me: He’s ours.
