TheOtherMate

“Isolde!! Isolde!!” She was too weak to respond to the call of her name. She had managed to get herself to her quarters, feeling excruciating pain in her behind. She began to wonder how things had gone so bad. She began to wish that her mother hadn't died. But then, this was her wish every single day. Ever since her troubles began, Isolde spent a fair part of her days wishing her mother had not died. But this was until she met and fell in love with Harald. A very stupid mistake, she had realized. “Isolde! Aren't you in??” The voice asked with a hint of confusion behind it. The person, Toiya, Isolde's bosom friend and the only one who seemed to care about her misery made her way into Isolde's quarters. Sadness fell on her face as she beheld her friend and could feel her pain. “Oh, Isolde. What else did that bastard do to you? You look like you're without blood. Oh, Isolde I wish I could help you. I wish I could take all this away.” “But..but..you can't…can you?” Isolde responded faintly. She slowly pulled herself up to sit. She could see the cloud of pity in Toiya’s eyes and she felt even more sorry for herself. Why did misery love her company so much? “I...I just wish my-” “Enough, Isolde. Stop it. Stop blaming your misfortune on the demise of your mother,” Toiya barked. “I should? Well, I don't remember being this miserable when she was alive. But she died and then my whole world changed. Do you think I enjoy this?” Isolde was starting to get angry, having her eyes cast an amber shade over their brown orbs. Toiya gasped as she noticed this. Could it be? Meanwhile, Isolde felt her anger rising, and because her body wasn't in good condition, she relaxed, letting all that anger fade into the background. But she had no idea that something had come over her. Unfortunately, it was the wrong person who even noted the drastic effect of her true anger. Something special that had already been foretold but not to Isolde's knowledge. “Relax Isolde. I just need you to wake up to your reality. Your mother is gone and she's never coming back. Your father has died as well and your stepmother couldn't care less about you. The Alpha has rejected you. What are you going to do now? Are you going to run away?” Isolde stiffened. She wasn't interested in answering the questions but she managed to say one thing. “I can't run away. There's no one and nowhere to run to. I suppose my fate is to die at the hands of the alpha and his so-called mate, my step-sister.” Toiya gave a slight nod of approval and the corner of her lips curved into a wry smile. Good answer, she thought. “I'm sorry, Isolde, but I must go now,” she said, getting up. “Already? I thought you came to look after me as you usually do.” “ I would, but after the humiliation you faced today, I must not be around you. And I have to return to the high quarters. I'm just a servant, Isolde; I don't have the freedom to do as I please.” She was starting to sound a bit rude and she noticed. “I'm, I'm sorry. I'll be here tomorrow.” Isolde watched Toiya's back as her form left the room. She felt that Toiya's visit was strange, and the fact that she didn't stay long. Normally, Toiya would stay and talk with her, never minding whatever humiliation she faced. Perhaps there was something she had to hurry to, the humiliation of that day was greater than anyone she'd faced. * * * * * * “Well?” “It was crazy scary! Her eyes went amber the minute her anger started to rise. I've never seen anything like that” “Of course, you haven't, you nobody. Well, it's true then. The prophecy is true. I felt that making Harald reject her would put a dent in her true destiny. That means, there's another one waiting for her. Another alpha.” The disdain in Avis' eyes grew as she analyzed the just-delivered facts. Isolde was something special and she'd tried every way possible to break her. She was sinisterly jealous of her. “What should I do now, mistress?” Toiya asked, feeling rather guilty. She loved Isolde to an extent but not more than she loved her mother. Avis, unfortunately, decided to prey on this fact and make her spy on Isolde starting from the day Harald rejected her. That very day. “Go keep her company. Make sure she tells you what she's up to, whether her wolf has started talking to her. She's not a lower beta after all but she can't know that, and Harald can't either. I fear he'll try and reconcile with her. It's not possible to take back a rejected mate but Harald can do that. He does whatever he wants without regard for anyone and that's probably why I fell in love with him.” Toiya was a little lost, allowing her mind to travel with all the information Avis was feeding her. “Hey! Are you deaf?” Avis wailed. “I'm, I'm sorry, I'm here. I heard you. But it may be a little difficult to find out whether her wolf's begun speaking to her.” “How so?” Avis asked, eyes burning with annoyance at Toiya's brooding incompetence. “ If Isolde is believed to be a lower beta, then she doesn't even think she has a wolf. Then, if anyone finds out that she does have a wolf, it changes the whole narrative.” Avis thought about Toiya's words and it turned out that she was right. If Isolde was discovered to have her wolf, it could change the whole situation. “ Listen to me, Toiya. If you want your mother to remain alive, you'll find any means necessary to get Isolde to confide in you about her wolf. I don't care that you have to sail the seas or climb mountains. Do as I have told you! Now, get out of my sight.” There was no way Avis was going to let the prophecy come to pass. There was no way she was going to let Isolde become who she was destined to be.
