CHAPTER 13
THE HIDDEN TRUTH
The door closed behind Ruth with a soft click, leaving Amara staring at the empty hallway. For several seconds, she didn't move. Her mind was still trying to understand what she had just heard.
“Your father left something for you.”
The words echoed in her thoughts.
Ethan stood a few steps away, watching her carefully. “Amara, whatever Ruth told you, you need to be careful.”
She turned toward him. “You knew about this?”
“I knew Samuel had hidden something. I didn't know where.”
“And you never thought to tell me?”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“Everyone keeps saying that,” she replied bitterly. “Yet somehow, nobody tells me the truth.”
Before Ethan could answer, Amara's phone vibrated. A message appeared from an unknown number.
LOCKER 17 HAS BEEN OPENED.
Her heart stopped.
A second message followed.
NOW THEY KNOW YOU HAVE THE KEY.
Amara slowly looked at Ethan.
“What key?”
His expression changed.
“Amara…”
She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out the small brass key she had found among her father's belongings.
Ethan stared at it.
“That,” he whispered, “was supposed to have disappeared twenty years ago.”
