LOCKER 17
The old railway station had been abandoned for nearly fifteen years, but Amara could still hear the faint echo of trains whenever the wind moved through the broken windows. She stood beneath the rusted signboard, clutching the small brass key Ruth had given her, and wondered for the hundredth time whether coming here had been a mistake.
It was nearly midnight.
The platform was deserted, the darkness broken only by a few flickering lamps. Somewhere beyond the station, a train passed in the distance, its horn cutting through the silence before fading into the night.
“Locker seventeen,” Amara whispered.
She followed the narrow corridor toward the old storage area. Rows of metal lockers stood against the wall, their surfaces stained with years of dust and rust. Most had been forced open or were missing their doors.
Then she saw it.

Her heart began to pound.
She inserted the key.
For a moment, nothing happened. Then the lock clicked.
Amara pulled the door open.
Inside was a small black box wrapped in faded brown cloth. Beneath it lay a photograph and a handwritten note.
Her hands trembled as she picked up the photograph.
Samuel Lin.
Her father stood beside Daniel Kwon, both men younger than she remembered. Between them was another man whose face had been deliberately scratched away.
Amara turned the photograph over.
Three words had been written across the back.
HE TRUSTED HIM.
“Trusted who?”
A voice came from behind her.
Amara spun around.
Ethan stood at the end of the corridor.
Her heart stopped.
“How did you find me?”
He took a slow step forward. “The same way someone else found you.”
“What does that mean?”
Ethan's eyes moved to the open locker.
“You weren't supposed to open that.”
Amara tightened her grip around the box.
“Then tell me what my father left behind.”
Ethan looked at her for a long moment.
“I think,” he said quietly, “your father left behind the truth.”
Before Amara could answer, the lights went out.
