CHAPTER TWO — Against the Odds

832 Words
The next morning, Emily woke up with a smile she hadn’t worn in a long time. She replayed every moment under the oak tree—the soft way Ryan had looked at her, the warmth in his voice, the way their hands had almost intertwined. It didn’t feel like just meeting someone. It felt like beginning something. What she didn’t know was that Ryan felt exactly the same. By noon, her phone buzzed with a message. Ryan: I know it’s early but… can I see you today? I don’t want last night to be just last night. Emily’s smile grew. Emily: I’d love to. They met at a quiet café in town, the kind of place where old couples held hands over coffee and soft jazz played in the background. Ryan arrived early—nervous, excited, impatient. When Emily walked in, he stood automatically, as if drawn to her by instinct. “You look beautiful,” he said, almost under his breath. Emily felt her heart flutter. “You’re very early.” “I didn’t want to risk missing you.” They laughed, easing into the same effortless comfort they’d found the night before. They talked for hours, telling childhood stories, fears, dreams—pieces of themselves they usually kept hidden. Ryan was gentle, protective in a quiet way. Emily was soft-spoken but deep, thoughtful. They fit together effortlessly. But while their world felt warm and growing, another storm was already brewing. --- Across Town… Vanessa sat in her car, staring at her phone, scrolling through Ryan’s messages from the night before. He hadn’t texted her once. Not his usual: Goodnight, Ness. Not his usual: Home safe. Nothing. Her fingers tightened around the steering wheel. Emily. That quiet girl from the party. That girl who didn’t even belong there. Who didn’t know Ryan the way she did. Vanessa had been in Ryan’s life for over fifteen years. They’d gone to school together, held each other through heartbreaks, shared secrets…the kind of bond she believed would naturally turn into love one day. But now this stranger was ruining everything. And Vanessa wasn’t about to let that happen. She started the car and drove, her heart pounding, her jealousy turning into something sharper. --- Back at the Café… Ryan walked Emily to her car like a gentleman, hands tucked into his pockets as if fighting the urge to hold hers. “I had a great time,” he said. “Me too,” Emily whispered. “Can we do it again tomorrow?” Emily’s heart flipped. “Yes.” Ryan stepped closer. “I’m glad I met you, Emily.” She looked up at him, shy but glowing. “I’m glad I met you too.” Just as Ryan reached to brush a strand of hair from her face, a voice cut through the moment. “Well,” the voice snapped, “isn’t this cozy?” Ryan stiffened. Emily turned. And there she was. Vanessa. Standing with her arms crossed, her jaw tense, her eyes burning with something Emily didn’t understand—but Ryan recognized instantly. “Vanessa?” he said. “What are you doing here?” “I needed to talk to you,” she replied sharply. Then her gaze slid to Emily, slow and cold. “But I guess you’re…busy.” Emily stepped back, uncomfortable. “I—I should go.” Ryan took her hand before she could leave. “No. Stay. Vanessa can talk later.” Vanessa’s eyes flashed. The rejection stung like a slap. She forced a tight smile, but her voice trembled with anger. “Wow, Ryan. A few hours with her and suddenly you can’t spare five minutes for me?” “It’s not like that,” Ryan said gently. “We’re just—” “Talking?” Vanessa cut in. “Laughing? Connecting?” Then her gaze snapped back to Emily. “Don’t get too comfortable. You don’t know him like I do.” Ryan stepped in front of Emily, protective. “Vanessa, that’s enough.” But Vanessa had seen enough already. Enough to know she was losing him. Enough to feel hatred blooming inside her chest—hatred for Emily, hatred sharp and dangerous. Without another word, she turned and stormed off, heels clicking angrily against the pavement. Emily exhaled slowly. “I’m…sorry. I didn’t mean to cause any trouble.” Ryan shook his head. “She’s my friend. But she doesn’t get to decide my life.” He looked at Emily, eyes soft, sure, unwavering. “I want to get to know you. And I won’t let anyone stand in the way of that.” Emily wanted to believe him. And with the way he was looking at her, she did. But neither of them knew just how far Vanessa—and soon, Ryan’s mother—would go to tear them apart. For now, Emily just felt the warmth of Ryan’s hand around hers. A warmth that would soon ignite love… and war.
