I stand beside her bed. They’ve taken what feels like a thousand different scans and tests. They’ve given her painkillers, but her body is still curled up from the pain. She’s lying on her side. Her eyes are closed. She’s awake! I know she is, but she refuses to open her eyes. My gaze falls on her hand. Her fingers are clutching the bottom of my T-shirt, holding on to me so I’ll stay close to her bed. I thought she was afraid of me more than anyone else… But apparently, that isn’t the case.
