Tunneling Through Time

213 Words
Shannon and Derek waved to Naani as she closed the door behind them.   The tunnel they were in looked like it had been hacked right through the mountain. The stone walls looked dry. The air didn’t smell musty. From somewhere, this tunnel was getting a good supply of fresh air.   Shannon and Derek began their way through the tunnel as the light of the torch bounced off the rock walls.   The way forward looked pretty unremarkable, until suddenly, Derek’s torch suddenly went off. He hit it a few times against the palm of his hand. Nothing happened.   Shannon felt the air being sucked out from all around her. She wasn’t breathing anymore, but she didn’t feel she had to. She wasn’t panicking. This was a place of utter calm. A familiar light appeared far ahead of them and began to make its way toward them.   A familiar apparition took shape.   “Isobel,” whispered Shannon.   Isobel was pure, white light. She came right up to Shannon and looked deep into her eyes. Shannon felt the being breathe. She put out her hand to touch Isobel.   Then everything went dark.   “Shannon, Shannon!” Derek’s urgent voice made her blink.   She felt two warm hands holding her face.   She was lying on the ground. Derek was holding her face in his hands and speaking to her urgently.   “Wake up!!”   “Isobel!” said Shannon.
