Five days before opening night Theo kisses me. Not on the mouth. On the forehead. But I need to tell it from the beginning or it does not make sense. It starts at Augustus's enclosure at six in the morning. I cannot sleep. Five days and the passing leap and everything available and one specific night and the specific complicated weight of two men and two completely different kinds of dangerous and I give up at five forty five and cross the lot in the dark. Theo is already at the enclosure. Of course he is. He is always already at the enclosure at this hour. It is his version of three forty five in the rigging. The place he goes when the day requires something from him before he can give it. He hears me coming. He says without turning around: coffee is on the fence post. I look.
