I was standing in front of an unfamiliar house while staring with confusion when I heard my
Mom calling for me.
“Vance, what are you still standing there for?” asked Mom.
“Aren't you coming in?” said Dad.
Still in confusion, I asked in return.
“Wait, what? Where are we? And why are we going to that house?” I told them.
“Oh, silly boy. Of course we're going in. It's our new home.” replied Mom.
“Yeah, did you forget? You've been asking us to move for as long as I can remember. And now we're here. Aren't you happy?” Dad said.
I can't believe what I just heard and more so, what I'm seeing with my own eyes. My confusion faded and now excitement is all I could sense. We finally moved! You have no idea how happy my heart is right now.
“I can't believe we finally moved! Thanks Mom and Dad.!” I enthusiastically told them.
“Now, let's go in.” said Mom and Dad in unison.
I quickly ran towards the door, pushed it open, then got in, when suddenly....
THUUUD!
I fell.
Yes I fell! I fell on the floor! I really thought we would move into a new home, but reality hit me hard. Like literally hit me hard.
I woke up in pain only to realize everything was just a dream. The only thing that was real was the pain I felt from the fall.
I was grumpy the whole day. What's even worse is that it made me remember memories from my dark days.
Remember the day I first met my bully? When I fell on my face? Yeah, that's right. I fell not because I was clumsy, but because someone intentionally put a big rock on my path when I was walking.
I didn't see the rock because I was too busy thinking about happy thoughts while walking. I remember having mixed emotions that day.
I felt embarrassed because a lot of students were looking at me. Some were laughing and some took pity on me. But mostly I felt angry at the person who made it happen.
Zac.
When I slowly got up from the fall, that's when I saw him staring at me, smirking but never apologizing at all.
I didn't know him that day yet. It was still the first day of school and we weren't even in the classroom yet. I only got to know his name when we introduced ourselves in class.
Yes, he was my classmate.
After that, my life at school became hell.
Zac was a big kid. He was taller than anyone else in the class. He was also a chubby kid, so he kind of looked scary and strong because of his body build. He's rude and arrogant and he likes to bully people, especially me.
While he was big, I was small. He was tall, I was short. He looked strong but I, on the contrary, looked like a wimp. I could say, I'm probably an easy target for bullies.
He came from a rich and influential family, so no one really dares to go against him. I wanted to do something but I'm a total coward. Just thinking about fighting back scares the hell out of me. So I chose to stay still.
Although I didn't do anything about it, I actually told my parents about the bullying. And I even asked them multiple times for us to move away. But it was all in vain. They just continued to ignore my request and would just tell me,
“Son, some children often get into a fight and that's normal. Just don't make it a big deal and be kind . And no, we will not move. We will stay here. Besides, this is our home. It's been with our family for generations.” My parents would tell me.
I didn't understand their decision at all. Shouldn't they be worried that their son is being bullied? Isn't that enough reason to move? So why won't they agree? I feel like they're more concerned about the house than their own son!
I guess I'll be bullied forever then. Unless something changes.
Unless I change.
