Kael Draven had never failed a hunt.
Not once.
Yet three nights had passed since Lyra Vale escaped the execution clearing, and the forest still held her secrets like a locked jaw. The Alpha stood at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, staring into the dark wall of ancient trees. The wind carried the scent of moss, wild roots… and something else.
Something silver.
His wolf stirred inside him, restless and agitated.
Mate.
Kael clenched his jaw so tightly his teeth ached. “She is not my mate,” he muttered under his breath, though the words felt hollow even to him.
Behind him, his Beta, Darius, shifted uneasily. “Alpha, the patrols are ready. But… are you certain we should enter the Forbidden Forest? No pack has hunted inside it for generations.”
Kael didn’t turn.
“That girl survived an execution,” he said coldly. “She broke chains forged by Alpha law. If the pack sees weakness now, our authority is finished.”
Darius hesitated. “Or perhaps she didn’t kill your son.”
The air between them went deadly still.
Kael turned slowly, his eyes flashing gold. “Careful, Beta.”
Darius lifted his hands in surrender. “I’m only saying what the pack whispers. Some believe she was framed.”
Kael’s wolf snarled deep inside him, violent and furious.
But the thought had already taken root.
The image of Lyra standing in chains returned to him, her eyes blazing with something that looked more like fury than guilt. If she had truly killed his son, why hadn’t she run? Why hadn’t she begged?
Why had she stood there… defiant?
Kael shoved the thoughts away.
“Enough,” he said sharply. “We hunt.”
Without another word, he stepped into the Forbidden Forest.
The moment Kael crossed the tree line, the forest seemed to inhale.
The air grew colder. Thicker. The scent of ancient earth clung to everything.
His wolf lifted its head, alert.
She’s here.
Kael could feel it too a faint, electric pull in his chest, like an invisible thread drawing him forward. The mate bond.
Damn it.
He pushed deeper into the forest, his warriors following behind him. Branches snapped under heavy boots, disturbing the silence.
But something about the forest felt… wrong.
It was watching them.
Miles away, Lyra froze.
The silver flame on her arm flared suddenly, hot and sharp.
Her wolf snapped awake.
Danger.
Lyra lifted her head slowly, her senses expanding into the forest around her. The wind shifted, carrying a scent she knew all too well.
Her stomach twisted.
Kael.
“He’s here,” she whispered.
The rogues around their campfire looked up instantly.
“What?” the amber-eyed rogue woman asked.
Lyra’s jaw tightened.
“The Alpha.”
The word tasted bitter.
Varik stepped out from the shadows, calm as ever. “That was inevitable,” he said.
Lyra turned to him sharply. “You knew he would come.”
“Of course,” Varik replied. “Predators hunt their prey.”
Her wolf growled violently at that.
“I’m not prey.”
Varik’s lips curved slightly. “Good. Then prove it.”
The rogues prepared quickly.
Weapons were sharpened. Escape routes mapped through the trees.
But Lyra didn’t move.
She stood still, staring into the forest.
Because the pull in her chest was growing stronger.
The mate bond.
Her wolf paced restlessly inside her mind.
Mate.
“No,” Lyra whispered harshly.
Her wolf ignored her.
Mate.
She clenched her fists.
The man who had tried to execute her… the man who had looked into her eyes and condemned her to death…
Her mate.
The universe had a cruel sense of humor.
The forest suddenly went silent.
Even the wind stopped.
Lyra felt it instantly.
He was close.
Very close.
Her heart started racing.
“Stay here,” she told the rogues.
The tall rogue frowned. “That’s a terrible idea.”
Lyra gave him a cold look.
“I wasn’t asking.”
Before anyone could stop her, she moved.
Kael stopped walking.
Something had changed.
The forest had grown too quiet.
Then he felt it.
That pull in his chest exploded like lightning.
His wolf surged forward violently.
Mate.
Kael’s breath caught.
“No…” he whispered.
But it was too late.
Because she stepped out of the trees.
Lyra Vale stood twenty feet away.
Moonlight spilled across her face, catching the silver flame glowing along her arm.
She looked different.
Stronger.
Wild.
Her hair was tangled from the forest, her clothes torn, but there was something powerful in the way she stood, like the earth itself answered to her.
Kael felt the air leave his lungs.
His warriors behind him gasped.
“The Moonbound mark…” one whispered.
But Kael couldn’t look away from her eyes.
They burned silver in the dark.
Lyra crossed her arms slowly.
“So,” she said coldly, “the Alpha finally decided to hunt me himself.”
Kael stepped forward, his wolf roaring in his mind.
Mate.
“You shouldn’t have survived,” he said quietly.
Her smile was sharp as a blade.
“That must be disappointing for you.”
Anger flickered across his face.
“You’re still accused of murder.”
Lyra laughed.
The sound was bitter and hollow.
“You sentenced me to death without even asking what happened.”
“You were found over my son’s body!”
“I didn’t kill him!”
Her voice echoed through the forest.
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Kael stared at her.
For the first time since that night… doubt crept into his mind.
But Lyra had already turned away.
Her voice came over her shoulder, ice cold.
“You tried to kill me, Alpha.”
She paused.
“And now you expect me to explain myself?”
The silver flame on her arm flared brightly.
Kael’s wolf growled.
Mate.
His voice dropped dangerously low.
“You’re not leaving this forest.”
Lyra turned back slowly.
Her eyes glowed brighter now.
“Watch me.”
And then the forest exploded.
Roots burst from the ground, twisting between the warriors.
Wind howled through the trees.
Kael’s men stumbled backward in shock.
Lyra stood in the center of it all, silver fire blazing like moonlight itself.
Kael stared at her in stunned disbelief.
“You…” he whispered.
She met his gaze one last time.
“You should have killed me when you had the chance.”
Then she vanished into the trees.
Leaving the Alpha standing in a forest that suddenly felt far more dangerous than he had ever imagined.
And Kael Draven realized something terrifying.
The girl he had tried to execute…
Was becoming something far more powerful than any Alpha alive.
