Nathaniel stood behind the sturdy old oaks across from the entrance to the school. He watched as Jonathan and Samuel emerged from the building. He had almost crossed the lane to the doorway. What a disaster that would have been, had he been mounting the stairs as the brothers came out of the building. He had seen and taken refuge just in time. He watched as the men spoke on the platform. Although he could hear none of it, he could tell their conversation was heated. When he saw Samuel turn and storm off toward the town, he quelled his desire to rush to Jonathan who was leaning against the building. Afraid that Samuel would turn and see he was there, he waited until Jonathan disappeared inside and Samuel was out of sight, before he crossed the road and mounted the stairs. Quietly entering
