Chapter 1

620 Words
To test whether Florian Evermont, my boyfriend, truly loved me, I hid my identity as the director's daughter, wore the cheapest clothes I owned, and went undercover as an intern in the entry-level department. But at a formal dinner one night, he stood by and watched as my intoxicated supervisor rested his hand on my thigh. "Listen here, kid, I know you don't have much money, but I think you've got real potential. Why don't you come work closely with me? I can guarantee you'll get a promotion next month! Your boyfriend told me you're eager to get ahead, so don't act like you're too good for this." I looked over at him in disbelief, but he silently turned his face away. The other colleagues around us were taunting the supervisor too, saying how lucky I was to get noticed by someone in charge. I shoved his hand away as hard as I could, ran out of the private dining room, and called my father right away. "Dad, you were right. Love really can't be trusted. I'll come back and take over the multi-billion-dollar family business instead." As soon as I hung up, Florian came out of the dining room. When he saw me, he frowned. "Grace, why are you being so difficult? It was just a joke. Do you honestly think someone in a position like that would actually take an interest in an ordinary girl like you?" he asked. I let out a cold laugh. "Publicly humiliating me and asking me to trade myself for a promotion is just a joke?" His expression shifted awkwardly for a moment, before he quickly put on his usual gentle smile again. "This is just how the workplace works... you have to learn to adapt. Director Parker holds the final say on who gets hired permanently. Plenty of people would jump at the chance to win his favor." "So you sold me out?" I cut him off, my voice trembling. "Those private messages... you took screenshots and sent them to him, didn't you?" Beneath the hallway lights, the silver stud in his ear glinted coldly. He suddenly laughed. "Grace, why act so high and mighty? Do you really want to spend your whole life wearing cheap dresses and riding the subway? Director Parker promised me the position of Project Manager. If you spend three months with him, my career will be set for life. You say you love me... so what's wrong with making a small sacrifice for me?" A wave of revulsion rolled through me. I could still clearly picture him bringing me flowers in the rain just three months earlier. Now, he was willing to hand me over as a gift, all to climb the corporate ladder faster. Loud laughter suddenly burst from inside the room, and the supervisor's smug voice carried clearly through the door. "Go get your girlfriend back, son! Tell her I'll save the spot for Chief Operations Director just for her!" I stepped back and pressed the elevator button, but he grabbed my wrist hard and dragged me back into the private dining room. "Play along!" he hissed quietly. Then he turned to the supervisor, forcing a bright smile. "Here we are... girls get moody sometimes, it's nothing. I'll talk her around. Don't be upset, Director Parker." Looking around at all their greedy, self-satisfied faces, anger burned hot in my chest. But I knew picking a fight right now wouldn't be smart. Besides, Dad had always told me that anyone aiming for great things must learn to be patient. I took a deep breath and walked over to sit in a quiet corner. I wanted to see exactly how far they would go to ruin themselves.
