Chapter 3

Director Parker’s expression darkened instantly. He stumbled closer, reeking of alcohol as his breath washed over my face. "Who do you think you are? You’re nothing but a lowly intern! For someone with no money, you’ve got quite the temper! But listen to me, kid... these days people mock poverty, not vice. That little pride you hold, so dear, isn’t worth a dime. So why not come work for me? I’m not joking around!" As he spoke, his plump, greasy hand reached straight for my chest. My eyes narrowed. I grabbed the nearest glass of wine and hurled its contents right at him. Wine splashed all over his head and face, dripping down his neck and settling into a dark, spreading stain across his crumpled suit jacket. The entire room fell dead silent. "You little vixen!" Director Parker swiped the liquid from his face, roaring with rage. "Do you have any idea how much this suit cost? Custom-made in Italy... thirty-eight thousand! You think you can afford to pay for it?!" Florian went pale and shoved me hard. "Grace, have you lost your mind? Apologize to Director Parker right now!" I stumbled back but steadied myself, then looked at the gruesome faces surrounding me and suddenly laughed. "Thirty-eight thousand? For fabric and tailoring this shoddy?" Director Parker shook with fury and grabbed me by the collar. "You’re not leaving this room until you pay me back!" Spittle flew as he shouted, and I turned my head away in disgust. I wrenched free of his grip, straightened my collar, and looked him calmly in the eye. "I’ll pay for it, but only after you apologize to me first." Not a sound could be heard in the room. You could have heard a pin drop. "Apologize?" Director Parker laughed, as if I’d told the most ridiculous joke he’d ever heard, his jowls wobbling. "Who do you think you are? A penniless intern demanding an apology from me?" Florian hurried forward, trying to smooth things over. "Please calm down, Director Parker... she’s had too much to drink and isn’t making sense..." "I haven’t had a drop," I cut him off coldly, holding Director Parker’s gaze. "What you just did is s****l harassment. I have every right to demand an apology." Director Parker burst out laughing and turned to the rest of the group. "Listen to this little thing... lecturing me about the law!" The others joined in his mocking laughter, and the sharp-tongued female colleague chimed in with exaggerated sweetness. "Grace, have you been watching too many dramas? Director Parker taking an interest in you is a privilege... don’t be so ungrateful!" I ignored her completely and held my phone up. "If you don’t apologize, we’ll handle this legally. I recorded you reaching for me just now." Director Parker’s smile froze on his face, and the laughter died away at once. "You..." His face turned livid as he lunged for my phone. I stepped back out of his reach and pressed play. The recording blared clearly... his lewd comments, the jeers of the crowd, all captured perfectly. "Delete it!" he screamed. "Do you really think I can’t ruin your reputation in this entire industry?!" Florian panicked too, his voice dropping to an urgent whisper."Are you insane? If you cross him, neither of us will ever get another job here! Delete the video now!" I let out a cold laugh. "Us? From the moment you tried to push me into his arms, there was no 'us' anymore." Director Parker suddenly went still, narrowing his eyes as he studied me. "You think a single video can blackmail me? I’ve been in this business for twenty years. I know more people than you’ve had hot meals. I could have you fired before you even get to your desk tomorrow." "Is that so?" I slipped my phone back into my bag slowly. "Then I suppose we’ll see who’s the one packing their things tomorrow." Florian grabbed my wrist so tight his fingers dug into my skin. "Grace! What exactly are you trying to do? He’s offering you a chance... don’t be so stubborn!" I shook him off and spoke clearly, emphasizing every word. "I want an apology. Until I get one, this isn’t over." Director Parker’s mouth twisted into a cruel smirk. "Fine. I see your mind’s made up to pick a fight with me." He looked right at me. "Alright. I apologize." To the shock of everyone watching, he gave a stiff, exaggerated bow. "My apologies, Grace. I had too much to drink and behaved improperly." He straightened up, malice glinting in his eyes. "Now... about that suit. Thirty-eight thousand. Cash or bank transfer?" Murmurs rippled through the room, every eye fixed on me, waiting to see me humiliated. I smiled, pulled a black credit card from my wallet, and set it lightly on the table. "Charge it. But before that..." I picked up the full bottle of red wine, and as jaws dropped all around me, I poured the entire thing over Director Parker’s head. "Now it really 'is' worth thirty-eight thousand."
