The next morning, Liana’s office felt like a battlefield. She stood by the large window, the skyline of the city sprawled before her like an endless sea of possibilities. The papers on her desk were a sea of meticulous contracts, figures, and notes preparing for the final steps of the takeover. Roman Wolfe had signed his fate. Now, it was time for him to pay.
A knock broke her focus. She turned sharply as her assistant, Jennifer, entered, holding a small silver tray with a white envelope. She raised an eyebrow. “What’s this?”
“Mr. Wolfe’s assistant brought it in personally. They said it’s urgent.”
Liana took the envelope and peeled it open. The paper inside was plain, the writing bold but formal.
“Liana, I agree to your terms. Let’s meet to finalize the deal. I’ve already made arrangements for a press conference. We’ll announce our partnership to the public.”
Liana exhaled slowly. The man was nothing if not predictable. She smiled bitterly, a fire of resentment flickering in her chest. He thought this was just a simple business arrangement. She hadn’t forgotten the way he had ruthlessly used her for his gain.
This wasn’t about business anymore. This was about payback.
With a flick of her wrist, she picked up her phone and made the call. “Set up the press conference. Roman wants a public show? Let’s give him a spectacle.”
The meeting was arranged quickly, and by evening, they were in a high-end venue, the city lights flickering outside the tall glass windows. Roman stood at the center of the room, his back straight, his expression unreadable. He had put on his “CEO” face, but Liana could see the tension in his shoulders.
She arrived just as he was addressing a small crowd of reporters, their cameras flashing in rapid succession. As her heels clicked against the marble floor, all eyes turned to her.
Roman's gaze was sharp, his lips pulling into a tight smile as he turned to face her. “Liana. You look…” He paused. “You look stunning.”
Her lips curled into a cold smile. “I’m sure you’ve seen me like this before,” she said, stepping forward. “But now? Things are different.”
The room was silent, the air thick with unspoken questions.
Roman gestured for the crowd to settle, and the noise died down. “I’d like to introduce my new partner, Liana Rowe,” he said, his voice loud and commanding. “She will be working alongside me as we navigate the current difficulties at Wolfe Global.”
Liana stepped into the spotlight with confidence, her presence overwhelming. “I’m here because, despite the mistakes Roman has made, there’s still a chance to salvage what’s left,” she said, meeting Roman’s eyes with a pointed look. “But my terms are simple. I will work with him, but I will lead. Publicly, you’ll see me as his superior. His mentor.”
Roman’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing. His eyes darkened, and for the briefest moment, Liana saw something flicker in them, an emotion he didn’t intend to show. Perhaps regret. Perhaps anger. Either way, it didn’t matter. She was in control now.
After the press conference, as they walked back to their private room, Roman’s voice dropped to a low, dangerously calm tone. “You know this isn’t how I expected this to go.”
Liana didn’t break stride. “It was never about your expectations, Roman. It’s about mine.”
He caught up with her, and for a moment, their shoulders brushed. A spark ignited, but it was a dangerous one.
“You’re playing a dangerous game,” he warned.
She didn’t look at him. “And you should be afraid. Because I’m very good at it.”
Roman’s hand closed around her wrist, his grip firm. “You think this is revenge? You’re wrong. You don’t even know how deep you’re stepping into this.” His voice was soft but laced with threat. “You won’t win.”
Liana pulled her wrist free, her gaze cold and unyielding. “I’ll decide when I’ve won. But I’ll need a little help from you.”
Roman narrowed his eyes. “What kind of help?”
“Your empire is crumbling, Roman. And you’ll need me if you want to stay afloat,” she said, her tone deliberately icy. “But the price will be higher than you expect. You’ll have to give up more than your pride.”
Later that evening, as Liana walked back to her car, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was losing herself in this game.
It was supposed to be simple: destroy him, break him, and take everything from him. But the closer they got, the more complicated it became. Roman was a constant reminder of the raw emotion she had buried deep inside her the attraction, the resentment, the unresolved feelings. It had always been this way between them.
And yet, it was still a game. She couldn’t let herself forget that. Roman was just a means to an end.
As she slid into the back seat of her car, her phone buzzed. Ezra’s name flashed on the screen.
She answered immediately. “Ezra.”
“Liana, I was thinking we could meet tonight. I’ve got a bottle of your favorite wine, and I think you could use a little distraction.”
Liana smiled, feeling a warmth she hadn’t expected. “I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”
As she hung up, she allowed herself a moment of respite. Ezra had been there for her, in ways that Roman never had. He was the safe choice, the one who cared without expectations. But that didn’t stop the jealousy that flared in her chest every time she saw Roman with someone else, every time he looked at her with that hunger in his eyes.
Liana closed her eyes for a moment. *This wasn’t going to be easy.
