6: Freeby I STOOD looking at the instrument dubiously. I had had quite enough telephone calls for one evening, and the memory of Bettina's call was still in my mind. I thought maybe somebody else was going to try something on. I picked up the receiver. It was Freeby. He said: "Sorry to worry you, but I thought you ought to know that Janine hasn't been home." I said: "I see. And you don't like that?" "To tell you the truth I'm not particularly concerned," he answered. "I don't know enough. But I thought you ought to know."
