THE UNEXPECTED APPEARANCE

1497 Words
Agatha woke up to a rare sense of warmth in the days leading up to the wedding. Though her circumstances were complicated, the excitement radiating from her friends and family made everything feel unexpectedly hopeful—at least for the moment. Her childhood friend Veronica arrived early one morning, practically buzzing with energy. She burst into Agatha’s room, carrying a bouquet of roses and squealing with delight. “Oh my God, Agatha! "You’re getting married!” Veronica nearly toppled Agatha in a hug, her eyes shining. “And not just married—married to Alexander Draven! I mean, do you know how many articles there are about him online?”Can you believe it’s finally happening?” Veronica’s voice burst through Agatha’s thoughts like a spark. “You’re getting married to Alexander Draven!” She nearly bounced on her toes, her excitement palpable. This was more than just a wedding; it was a moment that would be etched in their minds forever—a whirlwind romance celebrated in a flurry of satin and chiffon. Veronica plopped onto the bed, crossing her legs. “One or two? More like hundreds! He’s a celebrity, but he’s so private. This is huge!” Before Agatha could respond, a familiar voice echoed down the hall. “Don’t start the party without me, darlings!” Benny—Agatha’s flamboyant, ever-dramatic best friend—swept into the room with an exaggerated flourish of his arms. “I cannot believe you waited this long to tell me you were engaged!" To Alexander Draven to all of the people. Agatha, you are scandalous!” Agatha couldn’t help but grin. Benny had a way of making any room brighter. “It all happened so fast.” “Fast? "Honey, you went from single to bride-to-be in the blink of an eye!” He took one look at Veronica, then turned back to Agatha. “Spill. Every. Single. Detail.” Agatha perched on the edge of the bed, her gaze flicking between them. She felt a rush of gratitude to have friends who were genuinely thrilled for her, even if she couldn’t share the entire truth. “Well, there’s not much to say,” she began. “Not much to say?” Veronica echoed, looking scandalized. “Agatha, this is the biggest news of your life! When did he propose? Did he get down on one knee? What’s the ring like?” Benny gasped, eyes going wide. “The ring! Show us, show us, show us!” Agatha flushed. “It’s… still being resized,” she fibbed. In reality, the ring was a simple band Alexander had chosen—practical, elegant, but not exactly romantic. Benny made a face but recovered quickly. “Fine, we’ll forgive you for now. But you owe us a first look the second you have it.” Veronica’s eyes sparkled mischievously. “So, when did we meet the groom? I need to make sure he’s worthy of you.” Agatha’s stomach fluttered. She knew Alexander would handle meeting her friends in his typical, controlled way, but the idea still made her nerves dance. “Soon,” she promised. “He’s… busy with wedding arrangements.” At that, Benny practically leaped up. “Speaking of arrangements, we need to talk about color schemes, flower choices, bridesmaids’ dresses—everything! Please tell me you’re not going with anything boring like beige or cream.” Veronica clapped her hands in delight. “I voted for soft pastels or maybe a bold wine color. Ooh, or navy—navy is so chic!” Agatha smiled, their excitement contagious. “I was thinking of a soft blush theme. Something romantic.”Benny let out a dramatic sigh. “Romantic. I love it. You’re living my dream.” A pang of guilt tugged at Agatha’s heart, but she pushed it aside, focusing on the lightness of the moment. “I want you both to help me with everything. I… I can’t do this alone.” Veronica placed a reassuring hand on Agatha’s arm. “We’re here for you, no matter what.” Benny nodded enthusiastically. “Absolutely. "We’ll make this wedding the event of the century.” Agatha blinked back sudden tears, touched by their unwavering support. “Thank you,” she whispered. A Family Gathering Later that day, Agatha’s parents hosted a small pre-wedding luncheon at their home. The house was filled with the aroma of fresh flowers, soft music playing in the background. Veronica and Benny helped arrange bouquets and decorations, adding bright splashes of color to every corner. Agatha’s mother fussed over the table settings, her father chatting with relatives about the upcoming ceremony. Every so often, an aunt or cousin would pull Agatha aside, peppering her with excited questions about the groom. “How did you two meet?” “Is he charming, as the newspapers say?” “Will you travel the world together?” Agatha answered as best she could, sticking to the story she and Alexander had crafted—a whirlwind romance, a perfect match. The more she repeated it, the more convincing it sounded, even if a small voice inside her whispered otherwise. Benny, ever the life of the party, had everyone in stitches with his over-the-top enthusiasm. “I’m telling you, Agatha, if you don’t let me plan the bachelorette party, I will riot!” he declared, sending the table into peals of laughter. Even her father, who had been subdued since the arrest ordeal, managed a faint smile. “You’ve certainly brought a lot of joy into this house, Benny.” Veronica grinned. “That’s what we’re here for—to make sure Agatha’s big day is unforgettable.” Agatha looked around at the smiling faces, her heart clenching with a mixture of gratitude and unease. They were all so genuinely happy for her. She wanted to protect that happiness—to keep their excitement alive, no matter what it cost her. Just as the luncheon was winding down, the doorbell rang. A hush fell over the room when a familiar figure appeared in the foyer—Alexander Draven. Dressed in a tailored suit, he looked every bit the powerful man the tabloids made him out to be. But there was a subtle softness in his expression as he scanned the room, finally landing on Agatha. She hurried over, cheeks warm." Why are you here? “I didn’t expect you here. She was so shocked while asking those questions. He offered a polite nod. “ Your dad invited me to be here, and I wanted to meet your family before the wedding. I hope I’m not intruding.” Before Agatha could respond, Benny practically bounced forward, eyes sparkling with curiosity. “Alexander Draven, I presume?” Alexander arched a brow at Benny’s exuberance. “You must be a friend of Agatha’s.” “Her best friend,” Benny corrected, sticking out his hand. Benny. And this is Veronica.” Veronica joined them, flashing a bright smile. “We’ve heard so much about you.” Alexander’s gaze flicked to Agatha for a split second before he returned Veronica’s smile with a calm, practiced politeness. Likewise, "It’s a pleasure to meet the people important to Agatha.” Agatha’s parents approached, and introductions were made all around. The tension in the room eased as Alexander politely answered everyone’s questions about the wedding and plans. Despite the businesslike edge to his tone, there were moments when he glanced at Agatha with an almost tender expression. Her heart fluttered, and she found herself wondering if maybe—just maybe—he was trying to fit into her world. As the day wound down and guests trickled out, Benny and Veronica lingered in the living room, chatting animatedly with Agatha about bridesmaid dresses. “I’m thinking a dusty rose color,” Benny announced. “It’ll complement your blush theme perfectly.” Veronica nodded. “Yes, and maybe a soft lace detail on the sleeves—romantic, but not overdone.” Agatha smiled, relief washing over her. For a moment, she felt like a normal bride planning a normal wedding with her best friends. The tension in her chest loosened, replaced by a warm sense of belonging. From across the room, Alexander observed quietly. When their eyes met, he offered a slight, almost imperceptible nod. It felt like an acknowledgment—of her friends, her family, her life. That night, as Agatha lay in bed, her mind swirled with thoughts of the day’s events—her friends’ laughter, her parents’ relief, and Alexander’s unexpected visit. Despite the secrets and the complexities, a flicker of hope took root in her chest. She wanted to believe that this marriage could be built on something real. She wanted to believe that if she tried hard enough, she could protect the happiness of everyone around her. And for once, she let herself drift to sleep, dreaming of a future where love, rather than obligation, guided her down the aisle.
