Chapter 12: The Vanguard's Execution

986 Words
The morning sun rose sluggishly over the horizon, casting pale, weak golden beams across the Silver Moon territory, but its warmth was completely swallowed by the suffocating tension hanging heavy over the training grounds. The air was thick with the scent of frozen mud, wet iron, and raw, trembling panic. Hundreds of local pack members stood in stunned, breathless silence as Commander Kael stepped onto the raised wooden platform, reading the official battle roster aloud. His deep, raspy Lycan voice boomed off the surrounding stone walls like consecutive claps of thunder. “ First Battalion Vanguard, Front Line Unit One: Kaelen!" Kael barked, his silver eyes locking dead onto the former Alpha standing amidst the ranks. "You will lead the warriors at the primary western trenches. You will hold the center point." A low, horrified gasp rippled through the crowd of onlookers. The front line of the vanguard against a unified warriors of over two thousand feral rogues was a certified suicide mission. It was the exact point where the enemy collision would be thickest, bloodiest, and most lethal. It was a placement reserved for the disposable, a place where men went to buy time for the main army with their corpses. Kaelen stood rigid, his chest heaving under his unadorned leather jacket as the crushing weight of the imperial order settled squarely on his shoulders. He didn't look back at the whispering, pitying crowd of his former subjects. Instead, his dark amber eyes flew up to the high stone balcony overlooking the courtyard. Elena stood there, draped majestically in her royal violet cloak, her flawless face an unreadable mask of cold stone. She didn't look down at him with active hatred or burning vengeance; she looked down at him with an icy indifference, as if he were nothing more than a minor chess piece to be casually sacrificed for the structural safety of the board. “ Commander Kael, this is absolute madness!" Cynthia burst forward from the ranks of the warriors, her pale face flushed with a frantic, desperate anger. She couldn't control her panic any longer. "Putting Kaelen on the absolute front line of a vanguard chokepoint is an unmasked death sentence! He is the strongest physical asset this pack has left! He should be leading our forces from the tactical center, not being thrown directly into the slaughter!" Kael moved with a terrifying, blinding speed that defied human sight. In a fraction of a millisecond, he cleared the distance between them, his massive, armored hand wrapping brutally around Cynthia’s throat and lifting her inches completely off the ground. The surrounding Silver Moon wolves scrambled backward in absolute terror, clattering their weapons in panic. “ You speak out of turn again, barracks maid, and I will personally tear your tongue from your mouth," Kael growled, his body shifting slightly as his silver eyes flashed a lethal, bloodthirsty shade of anger . The terrifying pressure radiating from his frame pinned her down. "You do not possess the status to question the military strategies of Her Imperial Majesty. If the Queen commands you to march into a fire, you thank her for the privilege of keeping her warm." With a grunt of disgust, Kael dropped Cynthia roughly to the frozen dirt, where she lay coughing violently and clutching her bruised throat. Kaelen immediately stepped between them, placing his body as a shield, his posture completely submissive but protective as he looked back up at the high balcony. “ I accept the imperial order," Kaelen called out, his hoarse, rough voice carrying clearly across the silent courtyard directly to the ears of the woman above. "I will lead the vanguard. I will bleed for this territory, Your Highness. If my physical life is the absolute price required for your empire's protection of my remaining people, I pay it gladly." Elena didn't blink. She didn't offer a single word of reassurance, acknowledgement, or lingering emotion. She simply turned her back to the courtyard, her royal violet cloak swirling gracefully around her ankles as she disappeared back into the darkness of the pack house master study. By dusk, the western border looked like an open graveyard waiting to be filled. Deep trenches had been dug into the frozen, unforgiving earth, backed by heavy rows of sharp iron spikes. Three hundred elite Royal Lycan warriors stood in perfect, straight line formations directly behind the trenches, their custom forged silver armor glinting beneath the rising full moon like shreads of dangerous glass. But out in front of the defensive lines, completely unprotected, exposed, and vulnerable, stood Kaelen and the fifty Silver Moon wolves assigned to the suicide vanguard. The heavy, suffocating silence of the forest was suddenly broken by a terrifying sound a synchronized, bloodthirsty howling that shook the very leaves from the frozen trees. Thousands of glowing red eyes emerged from the absolute darkness of the dead forest canopy. The unified rogue horde had arrived, and leading them at the front was a monstrous, heavily scarred Lycan hybrid wolf twice the size of a normal predator. It was Alpha Silas, the Rogue King. Kaelen drew his dual blades, the steel ringing out in the quiet night air. His inner wolf let out a desperate, roaring howl of defiance as the ground beneath his boots began to vibrate violently under the trampling paws of two thousand feral enemies. He knew his chances of surviving the night were slim to none. But as he looked back one final time toward the high command hill, he saw Elena standing tall under the moonlight, a faint, ancient golden glow beginning to pulse beautifully beneath her skin. If he was going to die tonight, he would die proving to her that he was a warrior worthy of the bond he had so foolishly broken in this exact dirt. With a deafening, earth shaking roar, the rogue horde charged out of the treeline, and the slaughter began.
