12 Adrien was gone when I woke the next morning. Gone from the study, and gone from the house. Remmy said he’d left during the night, probably shortly after I fell asleep, by the sound of it. The only instruction he left was that I was not to leave the house for any reason. We were back where we started. I went to my room and burrowed under the covers. Being awake only brought more images of the dead man and made me relive the events leading to his death. I dissected every possible angle, every thought, every feeling, to figure out if I’d had any other choice.
