Coffee and Comfort

218 Words
Coffee and Comfort The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wrapped around them like a warm embrace as Clara slid into the booth across from Leo. They’d been meeting at Baxter’s Café for years, their unspoken sanctuary amid the chaos of the city. The place was a patchwork of mismatched furniture, soft jazz, and neon lights casting hues of amber and rose across the walls. “So, what’s the plan tonight?” Leo asked, his boyish grin as familiar to Clara as her own reflection. She shrugged, toying with the edge of her coffee cup. “Movie? Something terrible, so we can mock it?” “Perfect.” He leaned back, his gaze lingering on her just a little too long. Their arrangement was simple: friends first, benefits second. It started during a particularly cold winter, both nursing breakups and the sting of loneliness. Neither had expected it to last, but here they were, years later, navigating the delicate balance. Clara didn’t want to admit how much she looked forward to these moments—his laughter, the way he remembered her favorite coffee order, the comfortable silence between them. “Clara,” Leo said, his voice softer now, “you ever think about what this really is?” Her heart skipped, but she smiled. “All the time.”
