Episode 8: The Queen Awakens The forest held its breath. Hundreds of glowing eyes stared from between the trees. Elena stood at the center of the clearing, the golden light around her body growing brighter with every heartbeat. Beside her stood the enormous black creature, its silver markings glowing beneath its dark fur. Adrian remained between Elena and the approaching army. Kael watched from behind them, his expression unreadable. Then the first wolf stepped out of the darkness. A massive gray wolf. Then another. Then ten more. Within seconds, the entire clearing was surrounded. Elena's heart pounded. She had never seen so many wolves gathered in one place. But something was strange. None of them attacked. They simply watched her. Waiting. A low growl came from the forest. The wolves immediately lowered their heads. Elena turned toward the sound. Someone was coming. Slow footsteps echoed through the trees. One. Two. Three. A man emerged from the darkness. He wore a long black coat, and his silver eyes reflected the moonlight. The moment Elena saw him, an inexplicable pain shot through her chest. She knew him. Not with her mind. With something deeper. Her blood. The stranger stopped several meters away. “It's been a long time, Elena.” Her breath caught. “How do you know my name?” He smiled. “I knew your name before you knew how to speak it.” Adrian stepped forward. “Don't come any closer.” The stranger's eyes shifted toward him. “You're still protecting her.” “I always will.” A cold smile appeared on the man's face. “That is exactly why you will die tonight.” Adrian's eyes flashed. “Try me.” The air suddenly became heavy. The wolves around them began growling. Elena looked at Adrian. “Who is he?” Adrian didn't answer. The stranger did. “My name is Darius.” Kael immediately raised his head. “Darius…” There was something in Kael's voice that Elena had never heard before. Fear. Darius looked at Kael. “You remember me.” “I remember what you did.” Darius laughed softly. “What I did?” He slowly spread his arms. “I simply took what should have belonged to me.” Kael's expression hardened. “You destroyed an entire kingdom.” “And I would do it again.” Elena's hands began glowing. “Why?” Darius looked at her. “Because your family stole the throne from my bloodline.” Elena shook her head. “I don't understand.” “You will.” Darius lifted one hand. A dark mist began forming around his fingers. “You were born to rule the Moonborn.” He took a step forward. “But you were never supposed to survive.” Elena froze. Kael stepped in front of her. “She was a child.” “And children grow.” Darius's eyes narrowed. “Especially children carrying ancient power.” The black creature beside Elena suddenly growled. Darius looked at it. “So you found the Guardian.” The creature bared its teeth. Elena touched its head. “Guardian?” Kael answered. “The last protector of the Moonborn Queen.” Elena looked down at the creature. “You protected me?” The Guardian lowered its head. A strange warmth spread through Elena's chest. Then another memory flashed through her mind. A little girl running through a garden. A black wolf chasing her. A woman laughing. The little girl turned around. She was Elena. But she wasn't alone. A young boy stood beside her. Adrian. They were holding hands. Elena gasped. She looked at Adrian. “You were my friend.” Adrian's eyes filled with emotion. “Yes.” “You knew me.” “Yes.” “You promised you would never leave me.” Adrian swallowed. “I kept my promise.” “Then why did you let me forget you?” His voice broke. “Because forgetting me was the only way to keep you alive.” Elena stared at him. For a moment, everything else disappeared. The army. Darius. The forest. All of it. Only Adrian remained. Then Darius spoke. “How touching.” The spell was broken. Elena turned toward him. Darius raised his hand. “Enough memories.” Dark energy exploded across the clearing. “Attack!” The wolves charged. Adrian transformed instantly. His body shifted into a massive silver wolf, and he launched himself toward the first wave of attackers. The Guardian moved at the same time. It disappeared into the darkness and reappeared behind three wolves, knocking them aside with a single powerful strike. The forest erupted into chaos. Growls. Howls. The sound of claws tearing through earth. Elena stood frozen. She didn't know what to do. Then a wolf lunged straight toward her. She raised her hands instinctively. A golden wall exploded into existence. The wolf crashed into it and was thrown backward. Elena stared at the barrier. “I did that?” Another wolf attacked. She pushed her hand forward. A wave of golden energy struck it and sent it flying. But with every attack, the darkness inside her grew stronger. Black lines began spreading across her arms. Kael noticed. “Elena!” She looked at him. “Stop using your power!” “Why?” “Because you're losing control!” Another enemy charged. Elena raised her hand again. This time, the golden light became mixed with black energy. The blast was far stronger. It struck the attacker so violently that the ground beneath him cracked. Elena stared at what she had done. Her breathing became faster. “I can't stop it.” Kael ran toward her. “You must!” “I don't know how!” “Then listen to your heart!” “My heart?” “Your power doesn't obey your mind.” Kael looked directly into her eyes. “It obeys who you are.” Before Elena could answer, Darius appeared behind Kael. “Still teaching her?” Kael turned. Darius struck him across the chest. Kael flew through the air and crashed into a tree. “Kael!” Elena ran toward him. Darius blocked her path. “You should come with me.” “Never.” “You don't understand what you are.” “I know enough.” Darius smiled. “No. You know nothing.” He reached toward her. The moment his fingers touched her wrist, Elena screamed. A violent wave of energy passed through both of them. Darius suddenly stepped backward. His expression changed. For the first time, he looked afraid. “What are you?” Elena looked at him. The golden light around her had completely changed. It was no longer simply golden. It was silver. Pure silver. The wolves stopped fighting. Every creature in the forest became still. Even Adrian turned toward her. The moon above them seemed brighter. Elena slowly rose into the air. Her feet left the ground. Her hair moved as though she were underwater. A silver symbol appeared on her forehead. Kael whispered, “The Moonborn Crown…” Darius stared at her in disbelief. “No.” Elena's eyes opened. They were glowing silver. Darius stepped backward. “You were never supposed to have that power.” Elena looked at him. “Maybe I was.” The entire forest shook. A powerful wave of energy spread outward. Every wolf fell to the ground. Darius was thrown backward. Adrian transformed back into human form. “Elena!” She looked at him. For one second, her expression was completely calm. Then the darkness returned. Her body began shaking. “Adrian…” He ran toward her. “I'm here.” “I can't control it.” “You don't have to.” “What?” “Trust me.” Elena reached for his hand. The moment their fingers touched, the energy around her began calming. The darkness disappeared. The silver light faded. She fell into his arms. Adrian caught her. “You're safe.” Elena looked up at him. “I remembered something else.” “What?” “You were there the night my family died.” Adrian's expression froze. “Yes.” “Did you see my mother?” He looked away. “Yes.” “What happened to her?” Silence. “Elena…” “Tell me.” Adrian's eyes filled with pain. “She gave me one order.” “What order?” “To find you.” Elena's breath caught. “She knew you would survive.” Adrian nodded. “She told me that one day your power would awaken.” “Then why didn't she come for me?” “She couldn't.” “Why?” Adrian looked toward Darius. “Because she was captured.” Elena froze. “What?” Before Adrian could explain, a slow clap echoed through the forest. Darius stood again. Blood ran from the corner of his mouth. But he was smiling. “You really thought I came here for you?” Elena looked at him. “What do you mean?” Darius lifted his hand. A dark symbol appeared in the air. “This was never about killing you.” The symbol suddenly opened like a portal. A woman's voice came through. “Elena…” Elena's heart stopped. She knew that voice. Her mother. “Mom?” The voice came again. “Don't trust anyone.” The portal flickered. Then the woman's face appeared for only a moment. She looked older. Tired. But alive. Elena's eyes filled with tears. “Mom!” She reached toward the portal. But it disappeared. “No!” She ran forward. “Mom!” Darius laughed. “That was only a message.” Elena turned toward him. “Where is she?” “You want to see her?” “Yes!” “Then come with me.” Adrian stepped forward. “Don't listen to him.” Darius smiled. “He can't save your mother.” Elena looked at Adrian. Then at Darius. Her heart was torn between anger, fear, and hope. “Where is she?” Darius leaned closer. “In the Shadow Kingdom.” The name sent a chill through the forest. Kael slowly stood. “No…” Elena looked at him. “What is the Shadow Kingdom?” Kael's face had gone pale. “A place no living Moonborn has ever returned from.” Darius smiled. “But your mother is still there.” He turned toward the forest. “Come find her, Queen Elena.” He began walking away. Then he stopped. “One more thing.” Elena stared at him. “Your mother wasn't imprisoned by me.” Darius looked over his shoulder. “She was imprisoned by someone you already trust.” Elena's blood ran cold. Darius disappeared into the darkness. The wolves followed him. Within seconds, the forest became silent again. Elena stood motionless. She slowly turned toward Adrian. His face was unreadable. “Who imprisoned my mother?” Adrian said nothing. Elena stepped closer. “Adrian.” Still nothing. “Look at me.” He finally raised his eyes. There was fear in them. And guilt. Elena's heart sank. “You know.” Adrian closed his eyes. “Yes.” “Who?” He opened his mouth. But before he could speak, a terrible howl echoed from the mountains. The Guardian suddenly turned toward the north. Its fur rose. Kael whispered, “They're coming.” Elena looked into the darkness. “Who?” Kael's voice was barely audible. “The Shadow King.” A cold wind swept through the forest. The silver mark on Elena's forehead began glowing again. And somewhere far away, beneath a black moon, a man opened his eyes. He smiled. “Finally…” His voice echoed through the darkness. “The Queen remembers.” To be continued…
