Cassie POV “What did you just say?” My voice is shaking as I stare at the man I have been mated to for the past three years. “I want an open marriage, Cassie. That is what I said” He repeats it; his eyes are empty, lacking the love and warmth he used to look at me with. I laugh; this has to be a joke. What the hell is an open marriage Who does an open marriage with his mate? “Is this a joke? Like some prank or what?” I ask. He remains silent, his silence telling me everything I need to know. He has been sleeping with someone. He is seeing someone. I stumble back, my knees getting weaker with every step I take. I stare at him, sitting on our bed, legs crossed, a blanket over him; his eyes are on his phone. He has been on this phone for the past ten minutes, even after he announced this open marriage. “I don't understand… I… with who? I am your mate… I….” I stutter, my voice shaking. “You are my chosen mate, Cassie,” he reminds me. “I chose you because I love you” “Exactly!” I snap, my hands shaking, tears welling up at the back of my eyes. “You chose me, I chose you, we chose each other because we love each other. So where the hell is this coming from?” I take in a shaky breath and try to calm myself down. “Are you seeing someone? Are you cheating on me” Please no. He should tell me no. Caspian would never cheat on me. He does not have a freaking bone to do that. He has been in love with me since twelve. And has promised me that he would always stand by my side no matter what He shrugs. “Well, you can't call it cheating when we are fated, Cassie. I met my fate mate. The one the moon goddess gave to me” Wow! I have heard about this whole fated mate concept. A bond that was chosen by the moon goddess. Something that you could never end. The only way you could walk away from your fated mate was if you rejected her and took your chosen mate and marked her. I prayed that he would never meet his fated mate because I love him, but looking at him right now, with how indifferent he is. I can tell for a fact that he would never reject her for me. Never. “And you are not going to reject her?” I ask. I close my eyes, praying that he would say yes. That he would say he would choose me. “No.” his eyes are still ok his phone. I want to snatch the phone and slam it against the wall. “No?” I ask. He finally drops his phone to look at me. His eyes empty. “No. Because she is pregnant, Cassie. She is carrying my child” My heart cracks into tiny little pieces. The moon goddess has finally slapped me hard in the face with the most cruel insult ever. She is pregnant. His mistress is pregnant. While I have been sitting here ever since, for the past three years, with no child. “And is she going to keep it?” I ask. I know it is a very selfish decision. I should be happy. I should never even wish someone to abort a child. But this is my husband. The man I have loved. Someone I dedicated my whole life to. Someone I sacrificed a greater part of me for. To be without him would be to die. “The pack needs an heir.” he stands up from ty bed and strolls towards me. “I need an heir” “I can give you an heir, Capsian! It has just been three years! Three whole giving years. The doctor said I would get better. That I would give birth!” I scream at the top of my voice. He sighs in a deep breath before looking at me. “And if you don't? Who would be my heir? Is it you? Or the love I have, God, you…” Tears roll down my eyes. I shake my head. “You don't love me” “That is a lie, Caisse. A lie that you and I know. I have loved you. I have tried. I have waited. The pack, they are asking questions” The pack! Always this pack. Above my needs. Above my happiness. He has always put the pack first. But when I had a choice, I chose him. I chose him over my pack. How would I live? This woman would come here. He would lie on the bed that I picked while we were decorating our house. She would be on his arm side and make love to him while I stay in the other room, crying my eyes out. I can't even leave because if I leave his place. I am doomed. No one would want to be with someone the Alha rejected I would be condemned. Maybe end up in the strip club an slee my body for a few cents. My knees weaken, my heart heavy as my knees hit the floor. I clap my hands together the way I had done when praying to the moon goddess. Only that this time I am praying and pleading for my husband to hear me out. “Please, I have been mocked enough. If this happens, I would have nowhere to go and no one to meet. I can give birth; I am fertile. Give me time, three months, and I would get pregnant,” I plead, more tears rolling down my eyes. He ignores me, laughing with whomever he is chatting with on his phone. He takes a glance at me and then falls back to his phone. While I remained there, begging the man who promised me that he would love me not to leave me. “Caspian, please, you can reject the mate bond. You would have rejected the mate bond” This time he laughs; his eyes fall on me and sweep me up and down. His eyes are covered with nothing but pity and a little bit of irritation. “For who? For you? What have you given me?” My heart squeezed with more pain. The fact that he is not moved. He is not even trying to give me a sign of home. He just feels so relaxed. Like his mind has been made up. “A man can love two women, Cassie. And I am going to be taking her as my second wife. She would be the first and you the second. You would eventually give birth and move on. But I am not, and I would not sacrifice her and reject the mate. Besides, I have not forgotten what you did for me. It's why you are still here” He walks away, slamming the bathroom door behind him. This whole thing looks like a dream. Like some fairy tale that I desperately want to wake up from I can hear him laugh from the bathroom. He is happy. That is the most painful thing. I might remain here, but he is happy and has moved on. I gently sit on the bed and wait for him to walk out. A few minutes later, he walks out, a smile still on his face. “You can call the maids to move your things to the other room. She would need to stay in this room. You can call me if you need anything” I laugh. I can call him if I need anything. How do I tell him that the only thing I need in this world is him That I can't even be without him. “I would have never done this to you. Never. I would have loved you, Caspin. What you are doing is unfair. Who is she, by the way?” He pauses, his jaw tightening. “Caspian, I deserve to know who she is?” He turns to look at me, a hint of guilt in his eyes. Andrea” “What?” Okay, now this is crazy. “Andrea is your mate? Is your stepsister your mate? How long have you known?” His eyes soften as he stares at me. “For a long time, Cassie. Since we were eighteen. Even before we got married” Before I can say another word, he walks away Leaving me feeling empty. Useless and used.
