The Werewolves' Extinction

Prologue

MIA 

I woke up soaking in sweat.

I could feel a dull ache in my bones and muscles. Reaching over, I grabbed a bottle of water and noted the time.

"12:01, huh, Happy Birthday to me." I quietly laughed to myself.

I had been hounded for the last fortnight by Izzy to have some sort of 21st celebration, but I couldn't risk it, not while I'm right in the middle of my final exams.

Feeling a little guilty, I made a mental note to make sure I organized something after university exams. I took a sip of water and placed the bottle back.

Rolling over I, looked at my small dorm room. The walls were covered in Biology notes and scribbles, I couldn't wait to rip them down. The pain in my muscles began to increase, I winced and tried to breathe. I rolled over and sat up. "It would be just my luck I come down with the flu right before exams" I thought to myself.

I sat there listening to the silence, most of the other seniors had finished and left. I was the only one left on my floor. I envied them and their early exams. 

I began massaging my thighs. The silence around me started to become almost deathly, a ringing began in my ears and all of a sudden noises filled my head. 

I squeezed my eyes shut in pain and covered her ears with my hands. I felt like I could hear the whole world, the low rolling of vehicle engines of the street, high pitch laughing from university girls' on the street returning from a night out on the town, I even swore I could hear the small patter of fly walking along the window sil. 

I pressed hard against my ears trying to block the noise "deep breathes" I told myself. "what the f**k is happening to me?!"

A burst of smells suddenly hit my nose, alcohol, car fumes, pen ink, sweat.

Before I could even comprehend the smells assaulting my nostrils, I was hit with the most excruciating pain. I arched my back and my head flew back and causing my whole body to violent throw itself back into the bed. 

I tried to muffle the screams coming out of my mouth. I thrashed my body back and forth. My long black hair stuck to the sweat on my face. I tried to wipe it away but I felt like I had no control of my body.

"Hush Mia" came a soothing voice, "Just breathe"

I looked around, but I couldn't see anyone in the room. The pain increased ten fold followed by loud cracking noises. "f**k!" I yelled.

"Mia, this is going to hurt, I know your confused, but you need to trust me, just breathe and envision me" I heard the voice say again.

"Who the f**k are you!" I yelled out into the empty room.

An image of a pure white wolf came to the fore front of my brain. Its fur was beautiful and soft. It turned and it felt as it piercing turquoise eyes make contact with mine. Gently tilting its head to the moon, it let out a low and soft howl. The howl made me feel joy and excitement. It lowered its head and began running towards me.

My eyes snapped open and I was overwhelmed with pain again. My vision became blurry, I started hyperventilating. A wave of calm washed over me, I closed my eyes and let the darkness consume me.

ARLO

I sat back into my desk chair and glanced at the time 12:01am. I looked at the stacks of paperwork on my desk and rubbed my forehead.

"Ollie, I need a f*****g drink, a dam strong one too" I grunted.

"I thought you'd never bloody ask, what bottle do you want me to grab?" I heard Ollie reply from the couch.

"I need to go out, my wolf is giving me f*****g headache and this paper work is not helping." I replied.

"Alright boss, I'll grab Rueben and get an omega to organize a car" he winked at me before his eyes glazed over and he began mind-linking.

Within seconds Ruebs burst through the door. "I'm always up for a drink with the lads, thought you'd never bloody ask. Jess has been cracking that whip and driving me like a slave around the house! You'd think I was an omega with the way she's been going."

I laughed at his comment, he was not far off the truth. Jess was in her final semester of pregnancy and her hormones and emotions were on a high. Young pups were a rarity at the moment, most of our pack barely survives to be of breeding age, and those that do breed, leave the pack and go into hiding.

I was struck with sudden pang of sadness. I wanted a mate so badly, I loved my beta and gamma but I was lonely. I lost my sister last year and parents the year before that. I had a lot of weight on my shoulders and I know a Luna would of helped me with that. I stopped looking a long time a go. I felt she probably died like many other young pups. I knew I needed to take a Luna at some point but there weren't a lot of eligible wolves available.  

I was watching Ruebs and Ollie shadow box each other lost in my thoughts when I heard a knock at the doorway.

I looked up and saw Carter standing in the doorway. His face was a dead give away of the news I was about to be told.

"Who?" I asked.

"Mr. Gavin Sherwood," he replied. My wolf let out a small sad howl as I stood.

 Every time I lose a pack member my wolf feels it.

"Have the appropriate precautions been taken with the body?" I asked.

"Yes Alpha, and his family have gone into quarantine, but I think they will be safe."

"What makes you say that?"

"He only returned this morning after his trip to Canada, he wasn't feeling well and isolated himself in one of the empty pack houses towards the edge of the boarder."

"f**k!" I roared, slamming my fist down on the desk casing the guard in front of me to jump. Rueben and Ollie stood quietly on the other side of the room.

I tried to regain my composure, "Does his wife know how he may have come into contact?".

"No Alpha, but our intelligence team have noted a sudden increase of vampires in Oxford, its believed they may have been travelling through the same airport as Mr. Sherwood" he paused for a bit before continuing "Our spies on the inside state that they are looking for something, but we cannot confirm what it is."

I nodded and stared at my desk thinking. Every time I feel like we are getting on top of this we loose another pack member. 

"Thank you Carter, you are dismissed, please make sure that the body is properly cleansed. I will send Gamma Rueben around to speak the family tomorrow to organize the burial".

Carter nodded his head and left the room.

I sat back at my desk and rested my hands in my head. My body was aching and my wolf, Atlas, was restless. I could feel him running circles in my head. I internally tell him to sit the f**k down. "I think we need to go into the town, I don't know why but I'm feeling a pull, something is happening" I hear Atlas whine back.

"No f*****g way, did you not hear what Carter said, the towns riddled with them. The last thing we need is for them to find our location. I reply to him. Atlas whines and then settles, he knows I am right, my pack is priority and I cannot risk them.

"Earth to Arlo" I look up and Rueben is snapping is fingers in my face, while Ollie slams a bottle of rum down on the desk. "Maybe going out isn't a good idea" Ollie says as he pours me  a cold drink on the rocks.

I swig the drink down and gesture Ollie to pour me another. "Rueben, I need to you to mind-link our warriors and scouts. I want perimeter checks doubled and can you please get in touch with Flora and get a new batch of scent mask made. I want everyone to renew theirs, we cannot risk our pack being found."

"Oliver can you please contact the American Packs, find out how their numbers are fairing and if they know anything more on why the vampires have taken a sudden interest to Oxford."

They both nod and sip their drinks, they know when I use their full names I am in a serious mood and not to question me.

"I'm going to have to lock down our boarders, we cannot risk a pack member going into the city right now" I speak out loud not really caring if they were listening or not.

My hand wraps around the glass and it crunches, shattering into sharp pieces cutting my hand. My Beta and Gamma watch me as I throw the glass across the room. I grab the bottle of rum and storm off to my room. I know the rum won't do much, but it might help me get to sleep.
