The Mermaid King

999 Words
AGATHA'S POV I finish sewing the last beads onto Aileen's white gown and place it on one of the bed. She had tried it on earlier and didn't think it outlines her curves well enough to make the mermaid king wish she was his queen. So she ordered I resew and decorate it in accordance to her wishes. Now that I am done, I can take a break and explore the beautiful palace while they get ready for the dinner. The exquisite architecture of palace had me gaping while we were coming in and I'm yearning to see the rest. Clearing my throat, I murmur, "I'm going outside for some fresh air." All their eyes are focused on Penelope who stands in front of the mirror, no one pays any attention to me as I get up from the floor. I leave the room and walk back down the opulent hallway retracing the same path Lady Hellen had led us up earlier. Few minutes later I find myself outside marveling at the stunning tall buildings and inhaling the sweet scents of the flowers. The place is indeed a blend of beauty, opulence and grandeur. While in the lush palace gardens, I spot another unique building a bit far from the main palace. I immediately get this irresistible urge to take a closer look. The sun is beginning to set, but I can check it out before it gets dark. I stride towards the magnificent building, and through the big ork doors. It's open so I see no problem with going inside. I literally exclaim in awe at the sight of the opulent interior, shimmering with gold and and other priceless jewels. I make my way up the grand staircase and down a long hallway, admiring the intricate art on walls and elegance statues. I meet with a few servants going about their work. Some glace at me, probably because of my unusual features. As I make my way up a grand staircase, I suddenly hear this strange humming by the most mesmerizing voice I have ever heard. The alluring sound is coming from one of the rooms down the shorter hallway. It is like nothing I have ever heard before, rich, smooth, and yet, somehow, unmistakably male. My heart skips a beat as I immediately halt to listen. Then another sensation creeps into my senses, a scent so alluring and intoxicating that I find myself inhaling deeply. I step into the short hallway, tracking down the source of the smell. I once heard that us, humans can have and sense a mate bond when mated to other races like werewolves or mermaids, though such mate bonds are extremely rare. Can it be possible that I am feeling a mate bond? Why else would a masculine scent be so profound making me feel a very irresistible urge to get closer to it. I follow both the scent and the voice to a golden, slightly open door down the hallway. The smell gets even stronger and the humming more enchanting. I feel like the person behind that door must be my fated soulmate, my most awaited savior. Without thinking, I push the door open, eager to find out who is on the other side. Inside, the chamber is adored with very luxurious furnishings and fine cushions., But my eyes are more astounded by the incredibly tall, muscular male figure in a stylish dark outfit standing at the centre of the room, his back to me. His devine scent fills my nostrils, lulling away my overwhelming anxiety. As if finally sensing my presence, the mysterious figure turns around and our eyes lock. My breath catches in my throat. He is breathtaking! Chiseled like a work of art. Every feature on his face is perfectly proportioned. His eyes are a mesmerizing shade of emerald green, highlighted by pitch black eyelashes and equally dark, thick eyebrows. The lack of fat under his very smooth skin makes his impressive jawline even more noticeable. I should be explaining why I just burged into his room but I am too stunned by his looks to think straight. "Can I help you?" he sharply inquires, taking several strides forward. Yet it takes me a few more seconds to realize that I have been rudely ogling at his beautiful face. "I ... followed the sound of your voice," I stammer in a shaky voice. I should act confident in front of my beautiful mate, but his piercing gaze feels like tiny needles against my skin. He raises an eyebrow. Can't he feel the strange pull between us? Maybe I should just state directly. "I think you are my ...." I trail off, my breath catching as I notice a beautiful crown made of shimmering sea pearls and adorned with sparkling gemstones lying on the table behind him. Terror washes down my spine. There is only one being who would wear such a majestic crown made of sea pearls. The Mermaid King! "I'm your what?" he questions, his face wiped of any emotion and his eyes cold as ice. I am going to be in so much trouble with Catherine when she finds out I wandered into places I shouldn't have and even disturbed the greatest guest of the palace, the Mermaid King. My flight instincts screams at me to flee. "I am extremely sorry for trespassing," I say and literally bolt. I know it's so stupid of me to run but I only slow down to take a breath when I am back to the less opulent building we were ushered in. I still can't believe I came face to face with the mermaid king, and he might be my mate. But who am I kidding? The man littlary looks like a Greek god. I'm sure if he were to have a mate bond with a human it would be with someone who matches his elegance and status, someone like Aileen or Penelope. Not a cursed human like me.
