The one who heard

238 Words
The forest was too quiet. Not peaceful. Not calm. Wrong. Every step deeper into the trees made my skin prickle, my wolf pacing restlessly beneath the surface like she was listening for something I couldn’t hear. Beside me, Ryan was rigid. Alert. Alpha instincts fully awake. “You hear that?” he murmured. I frowned. “I don’t hear anything.” His eyes narrowed slightly, scanning the darkness between the trees. “Exactly.” A chill slid down my spine. My wolf shifted uneasily. Then It hit me. Not a sound. A feeling. Like invisible fingers brushing the back of my neck. Watching. Searching. My breath caught. Ryan’s hand suddenly wrapped around my arm, pulling me half a step behind him. Protective. Instinctive. Possessive. My wolf reacted immediately, a low warning rumble building in my chest before I could stop it. Ryan stilled. Slowly… very slowly… he glanced back at me. That look again. Sharp. Confused. Interested. Before either of us could speak A distant howl split through the night. Closer this time. Stronger. And my wolf My traitorous, restless wolf Rose to meet it. Not in fear. But in answer. Ryan’s grip on my arm tightened. His voice dropped, rough and dangerous. “…Aria.” My heart slammed violently. Because the way he said my name now He had heard it too. And somewhere deep in the darkness beyond the pack borders… Something had just found me.
