Shadow at the edge

385 Words
The howl lingered in the night air, echoing between the trees, and with every passing second, the silence grew heavier. My heart pounded so loud, I was sure Ryan could hear it too. He took a step forward, his arm still tense at his side, as if bracing for something just out of sight. “We have to keep going,” he said, his voice low but unwavering. I nodded, though every instinct told me to turn back. Something about this felt too intentional like we were being lured, not simply lost. Then, from just beyond the treeline, a faint glimmer caught my eye a flicker of movement, like a shadow shifting just out of reach. Before I could say anything, a sudden gust of wind swept through, and I shuddered, feeling as if a thousand eyes were watching. “Stay close,” Ryan repeated, his voice barely a breath. And this time, I didn’t hesitate. I took his hand, stepping into the darkness, knowing that what we were chasing was just beginning. As we moved forward, each step sank into the soft earth, the underbrush crunching beneath our feet like a warning. I kept close to Ryan, but every time I glanced at him, I saw a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes like he was trying to solve a riddle he hadn’t expected. Suddenly, a flash of silver darted between the trees a brief glimmer, almost like a shadow with a heartbeat. My pulse jumped, and I froze, my fingers tightening around Ryan’s hand. “What was that?” I asked, my voice just a whisper. He shook his head, scanning the shadows. “I don’t know,” he said, his jaw tight. “But we’re being led somewhere something wants us to move faster.” The wind picked up again, carrying a scent sharp, electric, like rain about to fall. My wolf stirred inside, urging me forward, and as much as fear coiled in my stomach, I couldn’t stop. Not now. The path wound deeper, each tree standing like a sentinel, and just when I thought we were alone, a flicker of golden light appeared ahead a figure, barely visible, waiting at the edge of the darkness. My breath caught, and I knew, in that moment, that everything was about to change.
