Two years passed. David and Ella got into the same college. Yury got into a different one across the city. They still met on weekends, but things felt different.
David was serious now. He talked about the future, about jobs and marriage. Ella listened and nodded, but sometimes she looked distant.
Yury changed too. He became popular in college. New friends, new stories. But every Friday night he was back at their old spot, the park bench where the three of them used to sit.
During a college fest, Ella performed on stage. She sang the song Yury taught her in class 8. After the show, David hugged her and said, "You were amazing."
Yury clapped from the back. His heart swelled and broke at the same time.
Later that night, Ella called Yury. "Can we talk?"
They met at the park bench. No David. No one else.
"Yury," Ella said. "I’ve known you since I was 5. You know me better than anyone."
Yury’s stomach dropped. "What’s up?"
"I think I made a mistake," she whispered.
Yury froze. Before he could answer, his phone buzzed. It was David. "Ella’s not answering. Is she with you? I need to talk to her. It’s important."
Yury looked at Ella. Ella looked at him.
And for the first time in 12 years, the three of them were about to break the promise they made as kids.
