Chapter Twenty-Two In the Dark

Carter’s POV

I’d run every inch of my border since Arielle's visit last night not bothering to get any sleep. My anger was driving me to keep going. The sun had set, risen, and sat again but I hadn’t spotted a single rogue near my territory. Their scents still lingered weakly in some areas outside the border proving Arielle's words to be true. No one would get to my pack and my mate let alone some lowly rogues. Cain is eager to keep going wishing to extinguish the problem before it can progress. We can’t start a witch hunt in a human town without exposing ourselves or I would agree.

I see the sun break over the horizon alerting the beginning of a new day. Levi emerges from the woods directing his patrol group to their new route as he makes his way to me.

“You need rest Carter, I can take over from here.”

“Inform me the second anything changes.”

With that, I run towards the pack house. I’m already shifting as I leap onto the back porch. I slide on a pair of basketball shorts we keep nearby and make my way to my floor. The exhaustion seeps in more with each step. Levi was right I need rest. Adrenaline would’ve pushed me through a fight but I wouldn’t have been at the top of my game.

My mate's amazing scent hits me like a brick wall the second I open the door. Lavender and honey invading my nostrils and wrapping around me. My eyes lock on the living room where a large blanket fort covers the couch and chairs. My coffee table sits against the wall effectively moved to the side. I quietly make my way around crouching to peek into their hideaway. Cassie’s sleeping form is curled around her son, wisps of her fiery hair spilling out of her bun where they stick to her face and pillow. She stirs slightly pulling Alex closer a small smile curving her lips as his body relaxes into hers. My family is so beautiful. “I can’t wait until she has our pups.” Cain purrs.

I don’t want to leave my family again just yet but the smell of sweat coming off of me from running for twenty-four hours demands I shower. So I make my way down the hall and into the master bedroom grabbing a clean pair of shorts from my closet as I enter the conjoined bath. The aroma of multiple different soaps still lingers in the air and I spot the culprits lined around the tub. The waterfall shower sits in the corner, I open the door turn the knob as far as it’ll go towards the hot side then step back. I wait until steam clouds the room and slide out of my shorts slipping under the boiling water.

Cassie’s scent hits me and I use my forearm to clear a spot on the large glass panes that encompass the shower allowing me to see through it easily. My beautiful mate stands staring at me. She’s leaning against the side of the door frame her plump bottom lip pulled between her teeth.

“You can join me anytime baby,” I inform her watching as her cheeks fill with color.

Cassie’s POV

The sound of footsteps pulls me to the edge of sleep and I snuggle closer to Alex trying to avoid the only possible culprit. I hear him walk away and open my eyes peeking around the room. The creak of the bedroom door draws my attention as I strain to hear what’s happening. Carter hadn’t shown up last night either and from the light streaming in the window, it was morning again. I have been worried about him. No contact for that long of a period was uncommon. Since we’d connected at the school months ago he hadn’t gone more than a couple of hours without reaching out. The situation I overheard must be weighing as heavily on his mind as it is mine. I’m bothered by the fact he never told me about the meeting or the rogues but I need to see that he is okay.

Removing my arm from under Alex’s head as gently as I can, I quietly exit the fort and tip-toe down the hall. The closer I get to the bedroom the louder the sound of the shower gets. He didn’t shut the bedroom door and I can see the bathroom is open as well. The steam from the hot water fills the bathroom fogging the mirrors. I’m leaning against the doorway watching Carter through the wet, steamy glass when his arm glides down the panel revealing more of his toned body to my hungry eyes. He’s definitely okay. Our time apart causes the ache in my lower region to make itself known. I tug my bottom lip between my teeth stifling a moan. Those emerald eyes meet mine for a second then his voice calls out huskily “You can join me anytime baby.” The heat pools lower wetness drenching my panties in anticipation for what is to come.

Carter finishes washing my long locks and we rinse off. He turns off the shower grabbing his towel and brings me one.

I wrap the towel around my body securing it snuggly then make my way into the walk-in closet. Keeping it casual I throw on a pair of high-waisted black skinny jeans and a red off-the-shoulder cropped sweater that hits right above the waistline of my pants pairing the outfit with some red converse. I take a seat at the vanity ready to pull out my makeup when Alex runs in.

“Mommy?”

“Yes, baby?”

“I’m hungry.” His bottom lip puckers out a pout playing on his lips as he bats his lashes.

He definitely wants more than cereal. “What do you want mommy to make you?”

His eyes light up “Chocolate chip waffles.”

“Alrighty.” I take his hand being led away. Carter is curled up in bed sleeping, little snores escaping him as we make our way through the room. I pull the door shut upon exiting, Alex dragging me to the kitchen.

Alex has been playing in his playroom after having eaten his waffles, giving me some time to think over everything I want to bring up with Carter. If I’m to be someone of importance in his life and in this pack I want to be informed of all events regarding mine and their safety. My opinion should hold weight in those situations. I’m sitting at the kitchen island tapping my fingers when the bedroom door slams shut drawing my attention.

It’s barely after noon, Carter hasn’t slept for long, he’s still in his shorts not bothering to put on different clothes. I stand walking up to him and breaking his path to the door.

I want to talk.

He looks aggravated that I’ve stopped him and places a tepid kiss on my lips. It lasts less than a second then he’s running out the door causing all of my concerns to die on my lips. I don’t like being left in the dark.
