Ava's pov:
As I lay in bed finding ways of how to stand up and get ready for work, I felt an unusual weakness over my body.
As I grabbed my sheets tightly, I dragged my feet along the way to the bathroom to get ready for work.
As I got to work, I greeted the other nurses there and got ready for the shift handover.
The day went by fast. There weren't many patients on admission today, so after their morning meds I took that as an opportunity to go to the cafeteria to get breakfast.
“Urghh,” I felt disgusted by the smell coming from the meal I just ordered. I took it back, but after the chef checked it they found nothing wrong with it, and so they returned it back to me.
I went back to my seat looking at the meal in front of me and was surprised at why I felt disgusted by the same food I ate everyday.
Annoyed, I just threw the food away, as it became increasingly hard for me to perceive the smell coming from the food.
“Maybe I'm sick”, “I thought to myself”. I got up and went over to the lab to undergo some tests.
A few hours later I saw the nurse coming with my results.
Miss Ava?
“I looked up at her”. My heart beating fast.
“Yes, that's me”.
Congratulations, you're pregnant. “The nurse said” with a smile on her face.
“ I froze….”
What? “I stood up immediately as I looked at the nurse in shock.”
“That's not possible…..”
“I can't be pregnant.” You must be kidding, right?
“ I looked at her expecting a response”, but all she did was nod her head indicating she wasn't joking.
I dragged the test report from the nurse's hand to confirm what she had just said.
As I looked at the paper tears started dripping down my face. That was when it dawned on me. Memories of that night came flooding in.
But!!
“Oh my God, what do I do now? I looked down at the floor while shedding tears.
“I could barely keep up with my own expenses”, so how was I going to provide or take care of another.
I thanked the nurse and got up to leave as I collected my results. As I walked back to my unit, all I could think about was the information I just received. I paused and looked at the paper for a long time and before I knew it, the report was almost drenched in my tears. I needed someone. Someone to talk to, someone to turn to for help and so I dialed Mia's number.
“Mia”
“Yes babes,”
“Can you come over to my house”? I have something to tell you.
“I said,” as I trembled, while talking.
“What's wrong”? you sound off, “Mia asked, her voice sounding concerned.
“Nah it's nothing serious”, just come over, okay. “I replied to her” with my eyes still watery.
“No problem babe”, I'll be there soon, and the call disconnected.
“The moment Mia arrived,I burst into another round of tears.”
“What's wrong”?
“Why are you crying”? ‘Mia asked’, as she threw her bag to one side of the room and came running to hug me.
I cried and sobbed as I held her tightly, refusing to let go
I opened my drawer and showed her the test results.
Her mouth wide open, she was left in shock.
I looked at her again, and seeing how she looked at the results, with her eyes wide open, I burst into another round of tears
Mia looked at me and hugged me tightly.
“It's ok Ava”, “it's gonna be fine.”
We'll figure this out together. “She said while hugging me, “her voice was so comforting.”
I don't know what to do now. I have no financial support. I explained to her with my voice shaking and hands trembling.
“Ava,”
I looked at her as she called my name.
“Let's keep the baby.”
“I froze…”
The moment she said that, my eyes widened and my chest pounded hard at the same time.
“Mia”, you know how difficult it is……
“Yh I know”, " she said as she cut me off my speech.
“Ava”, I know how you feel, and how difficult it might be, but you never know the fortune this baby could bring.
“I looked at her hoping she could see the reason as to why I was saying this.
“She held my hands tightly, and talked to me deeply. After a few hours of communicating, I finally saw reason to everything Mia counselled me on.
“Okay then” I'll do my best to take good care of my baby.
“I said,” as I smiled, and touched my abdomen even though the bump was still invisible. Now feeling some kind of relief, I breathed out.
The next day, Mia decided to go with me for a prenatal check up.
“Miss Ava”, take a look, that's your baby's legs. The doctor said as she kept on moving the fetoscope on my abdomen.
Your baby is strong and healthy, and you should not forget to always come for a regular checkup.
I nodded at the doctor, in response to what she said.
As I lay there on the bed, I looked at the screen as I saw my baby moving.
Instantly, I felt a deep connection between me and my baby.
I got down and thanked the doctor.
Mia and I walked out with smiles on our faces.
“A blessing was about to be born”

Weeks passed and my stomach grew bigger and bigger with time. Mia was always there for me throughout my pregnancy. She got me everything I needed.
I and James weren't always communicating like before. He probably might have been too busy at work, or he figured I wasn't the type of friend he wanted to keep after he found out I was pregnant.
It was the weekend, and like most weekends, I had to clean up my house. I got up early that day and prepared breakfast.
I savoured my meal ensuring no piece was left. I got up to wash the dishes and heard a knock on the door. It was the new neighbor. She came by to offer cookies, which I accepted whole heartedly. I thanked her and bid her farewell.
As I was about to take a bite of the cookie, I suddenly felt a sharp pain just below my abdomen. I held the edge of the table, squeezing it tightly as the pain struck again.
I touched in between my thighs and felt a liquid dripping down. The pain struck me again, becoming more unbearable.
“I immediately called Mia.”
The phone rang and the minute she picked in the middle of another pain “i screamed out loud”
“The baby is coming”.
