chapter 2

Aurora scrubbed the stone floor of the grand hall, her fingers raw and aching. The scent of pine and burning firewood filled the air, mingling with the distant chatter of pack members. Laughter echoed from the dining hall, where warriors feasted after a long day of training. She was not one of them. The mate bond between her and Alpha Killian should have made her special. Instead, it made her invisible. A cruel irony. His wolf called to her. His soul craved her. Yet, every time their eyes met, there was nothing but rejection. She had learned to live with it. Until tonight. A heavy silence fell as Killian entered the hall. His presence was a force, commanding submission from every wolf present. He was tall, broad, and powerful, his stormy silver eyes scanning the room. He was every bit the ruthless Alpha, feared and revered. Aurora kept her head down, focusing on her work. But even without looking, she could feel him. His scent—dark cedar, smoke, and something uniquely him—wrapped around her like a noose. She braced herself. But it wasn’t Killian who struck first. A sharp kick knocked over her bucket of soapy water, drenching her dress. Aurora clenched her jaw. Siara. The tall, dark-haired warrior smirked down at her, arms crossed. A rival she never asked for. "Oops," Siara said mockingly. "You should be more careful, maid." Laughter rippled through the warriors behind her. Aurora swallowed hard, refusing to react. "What's wrong? Can’t even defend yourself?" Siara sneered. She crouched down, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "You think the mate bond makes you special? Killian will never want you. You are beneath him, and you always will be." Aurora stayed silent. She had learned that words meant nothing here. But tonight, someone else had something to say. A deep, menacing growl ripped through the air. Siara stiffened, the smirk wiped off her face. Killian’s silver eyes burned with rage. "Leave," he commanded. Siara hesitated. "Alpha, I was just—" "I said leave." The warriors behind Siara shrank back. The power in Killian’s voice was absolute. Siara cast a furious glare at Aurora before stalking off, but Aurora knew this wasn’t over. Silence. Aurora remained on the floor, heart pounding. Why? Why now? Killian never defended her before. Never stopped them. Slowly, she dared to look up. His silver eyes locked onto hers. And then—he crouched down. Aurora stilled. Before she could react, his fingers gripped her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze. A shockwave of heat coursed through her at the contact. The mate bond ignited. "You let them do this to you," he murmured, voice low and dangerous. "Why?" Aurora’s breath hitched. "I am nothing, Alpha," she whispered. "A maid." Killian’s grip tightened. His eyes flickered with something wild, something dangerous. "No," he said. "You are my mate." The words shattered her. She had dreamed of them. But the way he said it—as if it tortured him—made her chest ache. "Then why do you reject me?" she whispered. His body tensed. For a moment—just a moment—something raw flashed across his face. Then, as if regaining control, he released her. "Stay away from me," he ordered. Aurora flinched. And just like that, he walked away. But she wasn’t given time to process the pain. Because the second he disappeared, another voice broke the silence. "You really don’t know, do you?" Aurora turned sharply. Davina. The Beta’s daughter leaned against a pillar, a wicked smirk on her lips. Unlike Siara, Davina was dangerous. A blade wrapped in silk. "You’re so clueless, little maid," she taunted. "Tell me, what do you think would happen if Killian knew the truth about you?" Aurora’s stomach twisted. "What truth?" Davina tilted her head. "Oh, you poor thing. You don’t even remember, do you?" Her heart pounded. Remember? Something deep inside her stirred. A memory just out of reach. Davina leaned closer, her voice a whisper of poison. "Killian may be fighting the mate bond, but if he ever finds out what you are—who you truly are—he’ll have no choice but to destroy you." Aurora’s breath caught. Her vision blurred, the words echoing in her head. What did she mean? What truth? Before she could demand answers, the heavy doors of the throne room swung open. The tension in the air grew thick as King Beta Alaric entered. The second-in-command of the entire wolf kingdom, a man who rarely made appearances unless something important was at stake. Killian appeared beside him, his face unreadable. Aurora watched as Alaric’s golden eyes landed on her. His expression darkened. "I need to speak with you, Alpha," he said. Killian nodded, but his gaze flickered to Aurora—just for a second. Then, without a word, they disappeared behind closed doors. Aurora stood frozen. Something was wrong. Something big. Her fingers trembled. Did this have to do with her? With what Davina had said? A sudden, searing pain shot through her chest. Her hand flew to her heart, her wolf howling in distress. She gasped, collapsing onto her knees. And in the depths of her mind, a memory stirred. A flash of blood. A battle. A powerful voice screaming her name. Then—nothing. Aurora’s vision blurred, her pulse racing. She didn’t remember. But something told her… she was never supposed to. And now, Killian was getting closer to the truth. The truth that could destroy them both. – Aurora stood in the courtyard garden, the place she only knows peace far from siara and Davina. Sheplucked a chrysanthemum and sniffed it what an irony. A f*****g irony. But true, when she is here she is free from siara and Davina two rivals and also her rivals. Siara is a skilled and trained warrior who since they were kids is obsessed with Killian. But who wouldn't. The sexy f*****g hot alpha. His features were sharp ranging from his jaw line to his prominent cheekbones and sculpted cheeks and his dalia dimples she saw once. Davina is another whole vibe, sharp and witty with a lot of brains but she just feels untouchable towards her. Everybody can bully her with words but laying a finger on her means a f*****g cruel fate for whoever the person is. She remembered the day he rejected her the day of the switching. It was the day Killian had complete full powers and everybody bowed to him as their alpha but when they both learned they were mates, that day became hell for her. 🦊 The moon hung high in the sky, its silver light casting eerie shadows across the packhouse. A chilling wind whispered through the corridors, carrying a tension that no one could name but everyone could feel. Killian sat in his study, his fingers tightening around the glass of whiskey he hadn’t touched. His jaw was clenched, his wolf restless beneath his skin. No matter how much he tried to push her from his mind, Aurora haunted him. She was his mate. And yet, she was a mere maid. His pride warred with the undeniable pull of the bond. The mate bond was absolute—it demanded submission, unity. But Killian was an Alpha. He submitted to no one. Still, the thought of Aurora burned through him like wildfire. Her scent lingered in his senses. Soft, intoxicating. Every time he caught even a whiff of it, his body betrayed him, his control slipping. He had spent years shaping himself into a ruthless ruler, feared and obeyed without question. He could not afford weakness. And Aurora—she was the kind of weakness that could destroy him. A knock at the door snapped him from his thoughts. He didn’t need to look up to know who it was. “Enter.” Beta Alaric stepped inside, his golden eyes sharp as always. The man carried a presence that rivaled any warrior in the pack, but tonight, there was something different in his gaze. Killian noticed the hesitation in his stance. Alaric was never hesitant. “What is it?” Killian demanded, his voice colder than the night air. Alaric studied him for a moment before speaking. “It’s about the girl.” Killian’s wolf bristled. His grip on the glass tightened. Aurora. He wanted to snap at Alaric for calling her that, for speaking about her so casually—as if she wasn’t the one thing driving him insane. But he didn’t. Instead, he leaned back, feigning indifference. “What about her?” Alaric exhaled slowly. “She’s not just a maid.” A tense silence stretched between them. Killian’s expression remained unreadable, but his pulse quickened. “What do you mean?” he asked, voice dangerously quiet. Alaric met his gaze. “She was found as a child near the ruins of the Moon Crest Pack.” Killian’s breath stilled. Moon Crest. The pack that was wiped out in the Moon War over a decade ago. A once-powerful clan, their bloodline thought to be extinct. “You’re certain?” Killian’s voice was measured, but his fingers dug into the armrest of his chair. Alaric nodded. “The reports were buried deep, but I found them. A girl matching Aurora’s description was discovered alone after the battle. No family, no known ties.” Killian’s mind raced. Aurora… the last child of the Moon Crest Pack? If this was true, it meant she came from a bloodline stronger than most. A lost heir. Killian hated how that realization sent a shiver down his spine. Because if she was more than just a maid—if she was born from an Alpha’s blood—then rejecting her wasn’t just difficult. It was dangerous. Alphas weren’t supposed to reject mates easily, especially not ones destined to hold power. The Moon Goddess didn’t make mistakes. Killian had spent every second resisting the bond, condemning her, telling himself she was unworthy of being his Luna. But what if he had been wrong? What if she was more than he ever imagined? His grip tightened until the glass in his hand shattered. Alaric remained silent, watching him. Killian let out a slow breath, his face unreadable. “She doesn’t know?” “No,” Alaric confirmed. “She believes she’s just a stray.” A stray. Killian felt something dark twist inside him at that thought. He had treated her as if she were nothing. But now, it turned out she had more claim to power than half the pack. His wolf growled lowly, pacing within him. “What do you plan to do?” Alaric asked carefully. Killian remained silent. He didn’t know. But one thing was certain—Aurora was not leaving his sight. No matter what. 🦊 Aurora could feel the weight of watchful eyes on her as she moved through the halls. It had been this way since the night she arrived here. The maid. The orphan. The one the Alpha despised. But tonight, something was different. The whispers followed her like shadows. She could hear the way the pack spoke of her, the shift in their voices. Something had changed. And she had no idea what. But she didn’t care. For too long, she had allowed herself to be small. To keep her head down, to be what they expected her to be. Not anymore. She passed a group of women in the corridor—davina among them. Davina smirked, but it faltered when Aurora didn’t shrink back as she usually did. Instead, Aurora stopped. Looked her in the eye. The air between them shifted. Davina opened her mouth, but before she could speak, Aurora spoke first—her voice calm, firm. “you know you are just a beta daughter “. Davina stiffened. Davina's eyes narrowed. Aurora didn’t wait for a response. She simply turned and walked away. And this time, no one laughed behind her back. 🦊 Killian found himself watching from the shadows. His mate. His unwanted obsession. The girl he had spent months tormenting, pushing away. But now, she walked through the halls with a quiet strength that unsettled him. She didn’t bow her head anymore. She didn’t cower. And the pack had noticed. His instincts screamed at him. He could feel it—the shift in the air. Aurora was changing. And for the first time since he met her, Killian felt something foreign stir inside him. A flicker of unease. She was not weak. She was not breakable. And maybe… she was never meant to be controlled. Killian’s jaw clenched. He would not let the bond dictate his future. He would remind Aurora who was in charge. “Bring her to me,” he ordered, his voice like thunder. The guards hesitated for a split second. But no one disobeyed the Alpha. Aurora had no idea that tonight—everything was about to change. control was slipping. He needed to end this—once and for all. Alaric, his Beta, entered the room. He took one look at Killian and frowned. "You’re losing sleep over her." Killian snapped his gaze toward him, his silver eyes flashing. "Watch your mouth." Alaric leaned against the doorframe. "You can pretend all you want, but we all see it. You’re fighting the mate bond. The question is—why?" Killian’s jaw tightened. "Because she’s weak." Alaric let out a humorless laugh. "You’re the strongest Alpha in the north. If she was truly weak, the Moon Goddess wouldn’t have chosen her for you." Killian turned away, gripping the edge of his desk. His wolf howled inside him, demanding him to claim her, to mark her. He closed his eyes. He couldn’t. He wouldn’t. Aurora was nothing. She had to be. Before she destroyed him.
